Assessment of heavy metal accumulation in freshwater fish of Dongting Lake, China: Effects of feeding habits, habitat preferences and body size

Xiaoming Jiang et al.

Summary: The concentrations of heavy metals in fish samples from Dongting Lake, China were analyzed. The results showed that most fish species had lower metal concentrations than the legislative thresholds, while piscivorous fishes had higher values of metal concentrations. The study also found positive correlation between certain metals and the trophic level, indicating biomagnification. However, the overall human health risk assessment suggested that the consumption of these fish species is safe for consumers.

A review of water pollution arising from agriculture and mining activities in Central Asia: Facts, causes and effects

Yu Liu et al.

Summary: Central Asia is facing severe water shortages and pollution issues, primarily caused by mining and agriculture activities. High concentrations of heavy metals and radionuclides result from mining, while substances like ammonia, nitrogen, and phosphorus are mainly from agriculture. Additionally, soil salinization and salt dust storms exacerbate water pollution in the region.

Effects of heavy metals speciations in sediments on their bioaccumulation in wild fish in rivers in Liuzhou?A typical karst catchment in southwest China

Xiongyi Miao et al.

Summary: The study found that HMs levels in sediments in karst areas are low, but Cd and Zn concentrations in fish are significantly higher than the soil baseline. Most HMs are present in the residual fraction, with very low proportions of exchangeable fractions that could impact bioaccumulation. Some fish samples exceeded the maximum recommended limit for certain HMs. Environmental factors have a significant impact on HMs bioconversion, especially the proportions of different HM species.

Heavy Metals and Arsenic in Water, Sediment and the Muscle of Oncorhynchus Mykiss from the Tishgo River in the Central Andes of Peru

Andres Condor et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, and As in water, sediment, and muscle of Oncorhynchus mykiss from the Tishgo river in the central Andes of Peru. While Pb concentrations in water exceeded standards, Cu, Pb, and As concentrations in sediment showed no significant differences between sectors. Despite heavy metal concentrations in the fish muscle being below international standards, it was concluded that there is no threat to the consumption of O. mykiss from the Tishgo river.
