Atmospheric aging enhances the ice nucleation ability of biomass-burning aerosol

Lydia G. Jahl et al.

Summary: Recent research has found that ice-nucleating particles in biomass-burning aerosol are driven by the production of mineral phases, and atmospheric aging can enhance the ice activity of these particles. Removing organic carbon particle coatings can increase the ice activity of biomass-burning aerosol by more than an order of magnitude.

Active sites for ice nucleation differ depending on nucleation mode

Mark A. Holden et al.

Summary: The nucleation of ice crystals in clouds is influenced by different meteorological conditions, leading to distinct pathways of immersion freezing and deposition nucleation. Experimental results on two atmospheric minerals show little correlation between active sites in these two modes, suggesting different properties determine the activity of nucleation sites for each mode. Therefore, the ability to nucleate is pathway dependent, and mode of nucleation must be considered when applying experimental data in cloud models.

Effects of Inorganic Acids and Organic Solutes on the Ice Nucleating Ability and Surface Properties of Potassium-Rich Feldspar

Jingwei Yun et al.

Summary: The study found that inorganic acids and carboxylic acids significantly affect the ice nucleating ability of potassium-rich feldspar, while polyols have no significant effect. The impact of oxalic acid and inorganic acids on ice nucleating ability is mainly related to the pH of the droplets, while the effect of different types of carboxylic acids on potassium-rich feldspar is inconsistent.
