Integrating GIS-based FAHP and WaTEM/SEDEM for identifying potential RWH areas in semi-arid areas

Mohamed Manaouch et al.

Summary: The study utilized the WaTEM/SEDEM model, GIS, and FAHP method to identify potential rainwater harvesting sites through thematic layers weighted with various data sources. The developed map showed 6.9% of the watershed to be extremely suitable for RWH. The integration of spatial soil erosion models with GIS-based FAHP proved to be an effective approach, with a prediction accuracy of 59.6% in this study.

Insect Outbreak and Long-Term Post-Fire Effects on Soil Erosion in Mediterranean Suburban Forest

Aristeidis Kastridis et al.

Summary: This study was conducted in a suburban forest in Thessaloniki, Greece to evaluate the impact of wildfire and insect outbreak on soil erosion. The results show that there was no significant increase in soil erosion in the areas affected by the insect outbreak, but there was a significant increase in soil erosion in areas where logging works had been carried out. Furthermore, the study reveals that the erosion rate in the forest areas affected by a fire 25 years ago is still higher compared to undisturbed forest areas.

Modeling soil erosion between 1985 and 2014 in three watersheds on the carbonate-rock dominated Guizhou Plateau, SW China, using WaTEM/SEDEM

Yao Luo et al.

Summary: The study reveals that soil erosion is a serious issue in the southwest Guizhou Province, and appropriate policies are needed to reduce soil loss. The impacts of changes in rainfall, land use, and terrain on soil erosion vary among the three watersheds, suggesting the necessity of watershed-specific soil conservation strategies.

Duration and intensity of rainfall events with the same erosivity change sediment yield and runoff rates

Wilk Sampaio de Almeida et al.

Summary: Different rainfall patterns have varying impacts on soil erosion, with high intensity and low duration rainfall leading to the highest runoff and sediment yield. The study results can contribute to developing new perspectives in designing water erosion experiments with simulated rain, considering the duration, intensity, and their association.

Trait-based sediment retention and runoff control by herbaceous vegetation in agricultural catchments: A review

Lea Kervroedan et al.

Summary: Soil degradation caused by concentrated runoff and erosion poses significant environmental and economic risks, particularly in agricultural areas with temperate climates. Utilizing herbaceous vegetation to increase hydraulic resistance and reduce runoff and erosion can be hindered by species specificity and intraspecific variability. A trait-based approach can help in understanding the direct effects of vegetation on mitigation of runoff and erosion while also enhancing sediment retention.

Reservoir sedimentation and its effect on storage capacity - A case study of Murera reservoir, Kenya

Parfait Iradukunda et al.

Summary: This study assessed sedimentation in the Murera reservoir in Kenya and found that sediment deposition is higher in the southern part compared to the northern part, resulting in a 14% loss of actual storage capacity for the reservoir. The results provide valuable information for policymakers in Kenya to develop mitigation strategies for sedimentation issues in the country's water resources.
