Irina A. Lutsenko et al.

Summary: New complexes of zinc(II) and copper(II) with 2-furoic acid were synthesized and their structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. These complexes showed good solubility in aqueous solutions and exhibited biological activity against M. smegmatis, with copper complexes showing the highest activity. Transcriptomic analysis revealed the impact of these complexes on the genes associated with bacterial growth, metabolism, and iron deficiency compensation.

Magnetic Anisotropy: Structural Correlation of a Series of Chromium(II)-Amidinate Complexes

Yuan-Qi Zhai et al.

Summary: Systematic substitution of amidine ligands in chromium(II) complexes leads to delicate changes in the CrN4 coordination geometry, with the compound bearing the largest substituent group displaying the largest distortion and field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior. High-frequency/field electron paramagnetic resonance experiments and ab initio calculations suggest that the smallest energy gap between ground and excited orbitals contributes to the compound's strong magnetic anisotropy. The study provides insights into the magneto-structural correlation in Cr(II) SMMs with distorted coordination geometries.

Unexpected behavior of single ion magnets

Roman Boca et al.

Summary: Slow magnetic relaxation is a common feature in magnetic materials, with the relaxation time determined by high spin reversal barriers and molecular spin. Recent experimental data has shown slow magnetic relaxation in systems with positive, small or negligible D. Some materials exhibit multiple relaxation channels.

Measuring molecular magnets for quantum technologies

Eufemio Moreno-Pineda et al.

Summary: Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) exhibit remarkable quantum effects, such as energy barriers, magnetization reversal, and quantum tunneling, which have been observed through bulk magnetometric and spectroscopic techniques. Advanced methods like scanning tunneling microscopy have provided insights into the quantum properties of SMMs at the single-molecule level, paving the way for their application in technological advancements. New techniques involving the use of photons to read the spin degrees of freedom in SMMs are also being explored for future developments.

Effect of ligand substituents and tuning the spin-state switching in manganese(iii) complexes

Subrata Ghosh et al.

Summary: Three mononuclear manganese(iii) complexes based on flexible hexadentate ligands were synthesized, and the impact of ligand substituents was studied through various analyses. The complexes exhibit different spin-state switching behaviors, with complex 2 showing reversible two-step spin-state switching and complex 3 demonstrating incomplete spin-state switching. Single-crystal X-ray structural studies revealed the presence of three different spin states in complex 2 during the spin-state switching process. Electrochemical investigations showed that the reduced state of manganese(iii) centers in complex 3 is more easily accessible compared to complexes 1 and 2.
