Seismic metamaterials for energy attenuation of shear horizontal waves in transversely isotropic media

Dian-Kai Guo et al.

Summary: Our study focuses on the energy attenuation of shear horizontal waves in a half-space with an overlying layer coupled with seismic resonators. Through investigating material anisotropy and coupling interference, we explore the potential of engineering internal structure of resonators to shield off seismic wave energy for earthquake protection. Additionally, our results show that the inclusion of seismic resonators can significantly reduce displacement responses, highlighting the effectiveness of seismic attenuation.

Frequency filter for elastic bending waves: Poincar, map method and experiment

J. C. Torres-Guzman et al.

Summary: In this study, a Poincaré map numerical method was developed to solve a fourth-order differential equation describing the flexural vibrations of a beam within the Timoshenko beam theory. A complex elastic structure was designed with a broad band gap, consisting of two coupled phononic crystals designed to overlap band gaps in their bending frequency spectra. Experimental measurements of the structured beams showed excellent agreement with numerical simulations.
