Adding an appropriate proportion of phosphogypsum ensured rice husk and urea composting to promote the compost as substrate utilization

Bing Zhao et al.

Summary: By adding an appropriate proportion of phosphogypsum, urea can replace poultry manure as the nitrogen source in the rice husk composting system, allowing for smooth fermentation and ideal substrates. Adding 30% phosphogypsum can significantly shorten the thermophilic stage, but may increase heavy metals.

Effects of phosphate-containing additives and zeolite on maturity and heavy metal passivation during pig manure composting

Yan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different additives on composting maturity and heavy metal passivation in pig manure composting. The results showed that all treatments reached maturity requirements, with phosphorus-containing additives showing higher germination indices. Additive treatments enhanced compost maturity by promoting VFAs decomposition and formation of stable humus substances. The bioavailability of Cu, Cd, Cr, and Pb was reduced during composting. The passivation rate of heavy metals was negatively correlated with VFAs and nitrogenous substances, and positively correlated with pH, germination index, humic acid content, and the ratio of humic acid to fulvic acid. The PPG + CaO treatment further increased the passivation rates of Cu, Cd, and Pb, and decreased the mobilization of Zn by promoting maturity and humification during composting.

Aeration rate improves the compost quality of food waste and promotes the decomposition of toxic materials in leachate by changing the bacterial community

Yumei Wang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of aeration rates on maturity, leachate, and bacterial community succession during food waste composting. Results showed that the recommended ventilation rate can improve compost quality and leachate utilization. Additionally, specific bacterial communities shaped by aeration could be manipulated by adjusting NH4+, NO3- contents, and pH in the initial composting stage.

Patterns of fungal community succession triggered by C/N ratios during composting

Cece Qiao et al.

Summary: It has been found that the functional composition of microbial communities is closely linked to local environmental factors, rather than taxonomic composition. The initial C/N ratio of composting material was analyzed to reveal the succession of fungal community diversity, showing a high occurrence of wood saprotrophs with a gradual decline of plant and animal pathogens during composting. Specific OTUs exhibited competitive and facilitative interactions with each other, impacting the overall pattern variations of fungal community in high-efficiency composting.

Heat potential, generation, recovery and utilization from composting: A review

Shiyang Fan et al.

Summary: Composting is an effective process for treating organic solid waste, and the interest in recovering and reusing heat from composting is growing. Current literature reviews inadequately address engineering aspects such as heat estimation, recovery, and utilization, so this study aims to fill this knowledge gap by providing methods for calculating heat potential, estimating heat production, and recovering generated heat. The study also summarizes the utilization of generated heat and identifies challenges and future research outlooks in this area.

Yan Yang et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the germination percentage and root length of seeds of 17 species to determine suitable seeds for evaluating compost maturity with the GI. Seeds of eight selected species were used to determine the GI of chicken manure composted with differing proportions of tobacco powder and mushroom substrate, with hybrid cucumber seeds showing the best representation of biological toxicity of the compost.

Additives for reducing nitrogen loss during composting: A review

Guangchun Shan et al.

Summary: NH3 and N2O emissions are major forms of nitrogen loss during composting, and additives can effectively reduce these losses. However, the wide variety and complexity of additives pose challenges and potential drawbacks. Physical, chemical, and microbial additives have their own advantages and limitations in reducing NH3 and N2O emissions during composting. Future research should focus on compound additives, reusable porous materials, and the activity of microbial additives to further enhance nitrogen retention in composting.
