Electrochemical Properties of Latosols with Different Mineralogies

Ronaldo Batista Pinheiro et al.

Summary: Studying the electrochemical behavior of colloidal particles is important for fertility management and soil conservation. This study aimed to determine the point of zero charge (PZC) and electrochemical behavior using potentiometric titration and ionic adsorption for three different Red-Yellow Latosols. The results showed that the mineralogical composition plays a crucial role in determining the PZC, and there was underestimation of the net negative charge by the potentiometric titration method in certain soil horizons.

Potassium management over 60 crops: A long-term study on an Oxisol under no-till

Ruan F. Firmano et al.

Summary: Potassium is a typical yield-limiting nutrient for soybeans in humid tropical regions. The study investigated the effect of fertilization on K balance in a highly weathered Rhodic Hapludox under no-till over 32 years of continuous cropping. It was found that K rates influenced yields over time, leading to either continuous K depletion or accumulation in soil depending on the rates.

Soil and water conservation management on hill slopes in Southwest Ethiopia. I. Effects of soil bunds on surface runoff, erosion and loss of nutrients

Kebede Wolka et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the quantitative effects of soil bunds on surface runoff, soil, and nutrient losses in southwest Ethiopia. The results showed that soil bunds effectively reduced surface runoff and significantly decreased soil and nutrient losses.

Potassium isotopic fractionation during clay adsorption

Wenshuai Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanism of potassium adsorption on clays and the isotopic fractionation during three experimental sets with potassium-containing solutions. It revealed that K adsorption equilibria were reached within a short reaction time, and the percentage of K adsorption and isotopic composition were pH-dependent. The results suggest isotopically heavy K preferentially sorbed on clay minerals.

Concentration and removal of macronutrients by soybean seeds over 45 years in Brazil: a meta-analysis

Dionata Filippi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between macronutrient concentration in soybean seeds in Brazil, soybean yield, and genotypes, updating nutrient concentration values for fertilizer recommendations. Results showed disparities with reference values in official fertilization recommendation systems in Brazil, emphasizing the need for reviewing standard values for soybean fertilization.

Refining phosphorus fertilizer recommendations based on buffering capacity of soils from southern Brazil

Gilmar Luiz Mumbach et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the fertilizer-P rates for total correction fertilization with varying soil buffering capacity in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Santa Catarina (SC) in southern Brazil. The phosphorus buffer capacity was significantly higher in soils with the highest clay content and there was a reduction in buffer capacity for soils with higher initial P availability. The phosphorus rates for corrective fertilization must be based on the soil clay content and initial P availability, with an increased rate for clayey soils.

Sorption Mechanisms of Chemicals in Soils

Daniel G. Strawn

Summary: The sorption of chemicals onto soil particle surfaces is a critical process that affects their availability for uptake by organisms and loss into ground and surface waters. Factors influencing sorption behavior include soil mineral and organic matter properties, as well as the characteristics of the sorbing chemicals. Advancements in analytical methods have enabled direct determination of sorption mechanisms despite the complexity of soils.
