Corrosion monitoring for prestressed concrete cylinder pipe spigot with combined use of Tafel extrapolation and surface acoustic wave methods

Summary: A novel corrosion monitoring method for PCCP spigots is proposed, combining the Tafel extrapolation and SAW methods. The self-corrosion rates and output voltage-time curves were determined using these methods, showing the effectiveness of mortar coating and sulfate inhibition on preventing rusting of spigots. Normalization based on amplitude is suitable for monitoring the entire rusting process, while normalization based on energy is more suitable for early stage monitoring.

Failure analysis of a buried large-diameter prestressed concrete cylinder pipeline subjected to strike-slip fault displacement

Summary: This paper numerically investigates the structural responses and failure analysis of a buried prestressed concrete cylinder pipeline (PCCP) subjected to strike-slip fault displacement while considering soil-pipe interactions. The main type of damage to the PCCP was found to be damage failure in each layer of the pipe barrel caused by axial forces, pull-out leakage of the joints caused by the relative rotation angle, and compression and stacking. The study contributes to understanding the failure modes, damage process, and disaster evaluation of PCCPs subjected to strike-slip faults.

Summary: The National Office of Water (ONEE) in Morocco has reported that prestressed reinforced concrete pipes (PCCP) used for supplying potable water in the semiarid region of the country are deteriorating due to the corrosion of the prestressed wires. The study evaluates the beneficial effects of fly ash (FA) incorporated in the mortar coatings of PCCP exposed to aggressive soil conditions. The results show that the incorporation of FA improves the resistance of the mortar coatings, leading to increased durability of the PCCP.

Experimental study on mechanical properties of prestressed concrete cylinder pipes (PCCPs) under external load

Mechanical properties of CFRP-strengthened prestressed concrete cylinder pipe based on multi-field coupling

Performance of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe in North Africa: Case Study of the Water Transmission Systems in the Tafilalet Region of Morocco

Summary: The degradation of underground prestressed concrete cylinder pipes (PCCPs) in the Tafilalet region of Morocco, used for drinking water supply, is mainly caused by chloride-induced corrosion of prestressing wires, high chloride ion concentration from soil and groundwater, as well as excessive sulfate ions accelerating corrosion. The exposure conditions in the region, coupled with design and manufacturing defects, also significantly impacted the durability of PCCPs.
