A calcium phosphate drug carrier loading with 5-fluorouracil achieving a synergistic effect for pancreatic cancer therapy

Junzong Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, amino-capped polyamidoamine dendrimer was used as a macromolecular template to form amino-modified calcium phosphate hollow sphere for drug delivery application. The system loaded with 5-fluorouracil performed synergistic cancer chemotherapy by inducing calcium overload and reactive oxygen species accumulation in cancer cells, leading to apoptosis. The delivery system showed high tumor inhibition via chemotherapy with minimal impact on normal cells and organs, demonstrating good biocompatibility.

Robust strategies to reduce burst and achieve tunable control over extended drug release from uniaxially electrospun composites

Nikhita Joy et al.

Summary: This study developed robust strategies to prepare electrospun composites that controlled release of budesonide over an extended timeframe. The ratios of poly(caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) 85:15 (PLGA) were found to influence the release behavior, and a dual-spinneret co-electrospinning approach was used to achieve precise drug distribution and predictable release. The findings highlight the importance of understanding system characteristics and designing appropriate blend ratios or co-electrospinning parameters for controlling release from composites.

Design, Synthesis and Adsorption Evaluation of Bio-Based Lignin/Chitosan Beads for Congo Red Removal

Xiaobing Han et al.

Summary: Morphology and intermolecular interaction are important factors in the design of efficient dye adsorbents. In this study, millimeter-sized bead-type adsorbents based on lignin/chitosan were designed for the removal of Congo red. The adsorbents showed high adsorption capacity and removal rate due to electrostatic attraction, pi-pi stacking, and hydrogen bonding. The results also showed that the 20 wt% Lig/CS beads had the highest adsorption capacity and removal rate, and the adsorbents exhibited good recyclability.

Self-assembled coumarin- and 5-fluorouracil-PEG micelles as multifunctional drug delivery systems

Sonia Lopez et al.

Summary: In this study, novel polymer-drug conjugates were synthesized and characterized. These conjugates, consisting of hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and privileged scaffolds with anticancer properties, were able to self-assemble into micelles and load other anticancer drugs. The sustained and controlled drug release profiles observed for paclitaxel and curcumin in the conjugates demonstrated the stability and potential of these conjugates as co-delivery carriers for synergistic cancer therapy.

(Macro)molecular self-assembly for hydrogel drug delivery

Matthew J. Webber et al.

Summary: Hydrogels prepared via self-assembly offer scalable and tunable platforms for drug delivery applications. Peptides are widely used as building blocks for self-assembly, while stimuli-responsive self-assembly provides opportunities for more precise drug action. Double-network hydrogels combine the beneficial properties of both self-assembled and covalent networks.
