3D Printing of Liquid Crystal Elastomer Foams for Enhanced Energy Dissipation Under Mechanical Insult

Chaoqian Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigates novel approaches to control the foam structure and the matrix phase mechanical behavior to enhance the energy absorption capability of flexible lattice foams. The introduction of an additional energy dissipation mechanism in the solid matrix phase material through 3D printing lattice foams with polydomain liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) shows dramatically enhanced energy dissipation compared to conventional elastomer lattice foams. Increasing lattice connectivity leads to higher energy dissipation in the lattice foam, with stretching allowing greater mesogen rotation than bending.

Healable and Rearrangeable Networks of Liquid Crystal Elastomers Enabled by Diselenide Bonds

Ling Chen et al.

Summary: This communication demonstrates the successful integration of an exchangeable diselenide chain extender for the preparation of dynamic LCEs, which could be reprogrammed on heating or under visible light illumination. Furthermore, the rearrangeable polydiselenide networks could be utilized to develop self-welding technology for fabricating hierarchically structured LCE actuators with sophisticated deformability, without the need for any auxiliary reagents during the assembling process.

Digital light processing of liquid crystal elastomers for self-sensing artificial muscles

Shuo Li et al.

Summary: Artificial muscles based on stimuli-responsive polymers have the potential to replace conventional rigid motors in next-generation soft robots, wearable electronics, and biomedical devices. By utilizing thermomechanical liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and a DLP-based additive manufacturing approach, high specific work capacity and energy density can be achieved, enabling applications in soft robotics such as reversible grasping, untethered crawling, and weightlifting. Additionally, an LCE self-sensing system utilizing thermally induced optical transition allows for intrinsic feedback control.
