Flag manifold sigma models: Spin chains and integrable theories

Ian Affleck et al.

Summary: This review focuses on two-dimensional sigma models with flag manifold target spaces, which are generalizations of the familiar CPn-1 and Grassmannian models. They naturally arise in the description of continuum limits of spin chains and their phase structure is sensitive to the topological angles determined by the representations of spins. Gapless phases can be explained by 't Hooft anomalies. In addition, integrable flag manifold sigma models are discussed, which generalize the theory of integrable models with symmetric target spaces. These models can be alternatively formulated as bosonic Gross-Neveu models, which prove useful in analyzing anomalies and describing potential couplings to fermions.

Matrix product states and projected entangled pair states: Concepts, symmetries, theorems

J. Ignacio Cirac et al.

Summary: The theory of entanglement provides a new language for describing interactions and correlations in many-body systems, with vocabulary consisting of qubits and entangled pairs, and syntax provided by tensor networks. Matrix product states and projected entangled pair states describe how entanglement is routed, act as a novel type of nonlocal order parameter, and their symmetries reflect global entanglement patterns. Tensor networks enable the construction of real-space renormalization group flows and fixed points, and are used to examine the entanglement structure of states with topological quantum order.

Riemannian optimization of isometric tensor networks

Markus Hauru et al.

Summary: The study discusses the use of gradient-based optimization methods on Riemannian manifolds to optimize tensor networks of isometries for representing ground states of 1D quantum Hamiltonians. The researchers introduce new optimization methods that outperform previous best methods, and provide open-source implementations of their algorithms.

Efficient matrix product state methods for extracting spectral information on rings and cylinders

Maarten Van Damme et al.

Summary: This study introduces an efficient method for capturing excited states in finite systems with open boundary conditions based on the matrix product state formalism, allowing for computation of the spectral gap of quantum spin chains. Despite the explicit breaking of translation symmetry, momentum emerges as a good quantum number for labeling excitations on top of MPS ground states. This method is also successfully applied to systems with periodic boundary conditions.
