Why Must Primordial Non-Gaussianity Be Very Small?

Jason Kristiano et al.

Summary: The one-loop correction to the power spectrum in generic single-field inflation, calculated using standard perturbation theory, turns out to be much larger than previously anticipated due to the enhancement inversely proportional to the observed red tilt of the spectral index of curvature perturbation. As a result, the primordial non-Gaussianity must be much smaller than the current observational bound in order to ensure the validity of cosmological perturbation theory.

Confronting the primordial black hole scenario with the gravitational-wave events detected by LIGO-Virgo

Zu-Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: By adopting a binned method, the mass function of primordial black holes (PBHs) is reconstructed independently of models based on GWTC-3 data. It is found that a broad red-tilted power spectrum of curvature perturbations can explain such a PBH mass function if the events have a primordial origin. However, events with component masses in the light mass range are unlikely to be explained by binary PBHs due to their much smaller merger rates compared to those predicted by LIGO-Virgo. Furthermore, it is predicted that the gravitational-wave (GW) background generated by binary PBHs and the scalar-induced GWs accompanying the formation of PBHs will be detected by future ground-based and space-borne GW detectors, as well as pulsar timing arrays.

A note on the abundance of primordial black holes: Use and misuse of the metric curvature perturbation

V. De Luca et al.

Summary: This article discusses the formation of PBHs through the collapse of large fluctuations in the early universe and points out that the use of curvature perturbation does not provide the correct PBH formation probability. Through a path-integral approach, it is concluded that the exact calculation of PBH abundance requires the knowledge of multivariate joint probabilities of the curvature perturbation.

Non-Gaussianity in inflationary scenarios for primordial black holes

Matthew W. Davies et al.

Summary: In this study, we work within an idealized framework to match a series of evolution phases defined by the second slow-roll parameter eta. We calculate the reduced bispectrum, f(NL), for inflation models with a significant peak in their primordial power spectra. Our findings show that f(NL) remains relatively constant over the scales where the peak is located, and we provide an analytic approximation for this value. Additionally, we identify the conditions under which f(NL) is large enough to have a significant impact on the production of primordial black holes (PBHs) and scalar induced gravitational waves (SIGWs). The analytic formulas for the gradient of the rise and fall in the power spectrum, along with these findings, offer a toolkit for designing or quickly analyzing inflationary models that generate PBHs and SIGWs.

Searching for a subpopulation of primordial black holes in LIGO-Virgo

Gabriele Franciolini et al.

Summary: This study performs a hierarchical Bayesian analysis using the GWTC-2 catalog to constrain the fraction of primordial black holes (PBHs) in the data. Different astrophysical models are taken into account, and it is found that the fraction of PBHs varies significantly depending on the assumed models. The contribution from the stable-mass-transfer isolated formation channel reduces the need for PBHs, except in explaining mass-gap events.

Constraints on primordial black holes

Bernard Carr et al.

Summary: In this article, constraints on the fraction of the Universe that may have gone into primordial black holes (PBHs) over a range of masses are updated. The discussion covers the reasons why PBHs smaller than a certain mass threshold are constrained and the various constraints on PBHs larger than that threshold.

Two populations of LIGO-Virgo black holes

Gert Hutsi et al.

Summary: The study suggests that a population consisting solely of primordial black holes is unlikely, with the best fit being a combination of astrophysical and primordial merger rates. The data also indicates the possibility of two distinct astrophysical black hole populations.

Bayesian evidence for both astrophysical and primordial black holes: mapping the GWTC-2 catalog to third-generation detectors

V De Luca et al.

Summary: The study suggests that black hole merger events may be explained by a combination of astrophysical and primordial black holes, with the mixed model having strong statistical evidence in support. It is found that astrophysical mergers account for roughly four times the amount of primordial black hole events, and predicts that future third-generation detectors will detect hundreds of mergers from primordial black hole binaries at higher redshifts.

Non-gaussianities for primordial black hole formation

Marco Taoso et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the impact of primordial non-gaussianities in the presence of an ultra-slow phase during inflationary dynamics, focusing on scenarios relevant for the production of primordial black holes. By computing the three-point correlation function of comoving curvature perturbations, it is found that non-gaussianities are significant and mainly local, affecting the estimated abundance of primordial black holes obtained with the Gaussian approximation. However, it is shown that this effect can be compensated by slightly adjusting the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum of curvature perturbations through a small tuning of the parameters of the inflationary model.

Constraining the primordial black hole scenario with Bayesian inference and machine learning: The GWTC-2 gravitational wave catalog

Kaze W. K. Wong et al.

Summary: Using the GWTC-2 dataset from the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration, researchers investigated whether all black hole mergers observed so far are of primordial origin. They constrained primordial black hole formation models and found that PBHs may only comprise a fraction smaller than 0.3% of the total dark matter, with their predicted abundance still being compatible with other constraints.
