Temperature impacts fate of antibiotic resistance genes during vermicomposting of domestic excess activated sludge

Guangyu Cui et al.

Summary: The effect of temperature on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during vermicomposting of domestic excess sludge is poorly understood. This study investigated the fate of ARGs, bacterial community, and their relationship at three different temperatures. The results show that temperature significantly affected the removal of ARGs, with 20 degrees C being the most suitable temperature for achieving both the highest removal efficiency of ARGs and the good biostability of the final product.

Higher spreading risk of antibacterial biocide and heavy metal resistance genes than antibiotic resistance genes in aerobic granular sludge

Dingchang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a metagenomic approach was used to investigate the enrichment and mobility of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibacterial biocide & metal resistance genes (BMRGs) during aerobic granular sludge (AGS) formation. The results showed that the relative abundance of BMRGs was significantly higher than that of ARGs. AGS process was found to be more conducive to the enrichment of BMRGs, posing a greater risk of drug resistance. The study also identified specific microbial metabolisms and regulatory genes associated with the enrichment of ARGs and BMRGs.

Removal of pathogen and antibiotic resistance genes from waste activated sludge by different pre-treatment approaches

Min Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy of various waste activated sludge pre-treatment approaches in inactivating coliforms/E. coli and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs), with electro-Fenton proving to be the most efficient in disinfecting potential pathogens. However, all pre-treatment methods showed lower efficiency in inactivating ARGs/intI1 compared to coliforms/E. coli. Mechanical ultrasound treatment was effective in reducing ARGs/intI1, but not in inactivating coliforms/E. coli in the treated sludge. High regrowth rates of coliforms/E. coli were observed in the treated sludge, while the abundance of ARGs/intI1 continuously decreased during the after-treatment incubation. Further investigation is needed to understand the reduction of ARGs/intI1 in waste activated sludge.

Effect of ultrasonic and ozone pretreatment on the fate of enteric indicator bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes, and anaerobic digestion of dairy wastewater

Xiaojuan Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that US/ozone pretreatment can effectively reduce the concentration of enteric indicator bacteria, but cannot decrease the absolute concentration of antibiotic resistance genes. In the anaerobic digestion process of dairy wastewater, using ozone or US/ozone pretreatment can significantly increase methane production and inhibit the enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes.
