Investigation of failure mechanism of rechargeable zinc-air batteries with poly(acrylic acid) alkaline gel electrolyte during discharge-charge cycles at different current densities

Zhishuang Song et al.

Summary: Flexible zinc-air batteries have a promising future for emerging electronic devices, but their short cycle life limits their large-scale applications. The content of OH- in the gel polymer electrolyte is crucial for the cycling life of FZABs under low current densities. The deteriorative electrochemical performance of the air electrode at high charging potential is the key factor leading to battery failure under high current densities. Passivation of the Zn electrode, increased interface resistance, and reduced electrochemical performance of the air electrode during cycling at even higher current densities are also reasons for battery failure.
