Sarcopenia and risk of osteoporosis, falls and bone fractures in patients with chronic kidney disease: A systematic review

Anahita Rashid et al.

Summary: This systematic review explored the occurrence of osteoporosis, falls, and fractures in patients with sarcopenia and CKD, and found a significant association between sarcopenia and decreased bone mineral density/osteoporosis in patients with CKD. However, due to the heterogeneity of the included studies, a meta-analysis could not be conducted.

Association between body composition, sarcopenia and pulmonary function in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Nathalie Martinez-Luna et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of body composition compartments and sarcopenia on pulmonary function in COPD patients. The results showed associations between body mass index, fat-free mass, skeletal muscle mass index, appendicular skeletal muscle mass index, and phase angle with FEV1 (%), and positive associations between phase angle and exercise tolerance with FVC (%). Body composition, especially phase angle, skeletal muscle mass index, appendicular skeletal muscle mass index, and sarcopenia, significantly affect pulmonary function.

Effects of adequate dietary protein with whey protein, leucine, and vitamin D supplementation on sarcopenia in older adults: An open-label, parallel-group study

Chih-Chien Lin et al.

Summary: The study suggests that adequate protein intake can help maintain muscle mass and strength, but the effectiveness of nutritional supplementation in sarcopenic patients remains controversial. Results indicate that protein supplementation can improve gait speed, especially in patients under the age of 75.

Sarcopenia in chronic kidney disease: what have we learned so far?

Alice Sabatino et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia, initially defined as muscle loss in elderly by Irwin Rosenberg in 1988, has now evolved to encompass not only muscle mass loss but also strength and physical performance decline in consensus papers. In CKD, sarcopenia is prevalent not just due to aging, but also accelerated protein breakdown from the disease and dialysis, associated with worse clinical outcomes.

Sarcopenia - Molecular mechanisms and open questions

Petra Wiedmer et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia is a muscle-wasting syndrome characterized by progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, quality, and strength during normal aging. Patients with sarcopenia mainly suffer from loss of muscle strength, leading to mobility disorders, increased risk of morbidity, and mortality. Various molecular mechanisms, including hormone function, muscle fiber composition, and inflammatory pathways, have been identified as causes of sarcopenia.

Prevalence of sarcopenic obesity and sarcopenic overweight in the general population: The lifelines cohort study

Carlijn A. Wagenaar et al.

Summary: The study assessed the prevalence and determinants of sarcopenic obesity (SO) and sarcopenia in overweight (SOW) in a general population, finding higher prevalence of SOW and SO in females across all age groups, with age being a significant determinant of both conditions. Subjects over 70 years old accounted for 82.5% and 80.4% of SO and SOW patients, respectively.

Comparison of calorie and nutrient intake among elderly with and without sarcopenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Emanuelle C. S. Santiago et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that elderly individuals with sarcopenia consume significantly lower calories and nutrients compared to those without sarcopenia, including proteins, carbohydrates, saturated fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Further research is needed to determine the best interventions to improve calorie and nutrient intake in the aging population.
