Cost and Energy Metrics for Municipal Water Reuse

Daniel E. Giammar et al.

Summary: This study provides information on the current technological and regulatory statuses of municipal reuse and compares cost and energy metrics for different treatment trains and water sources. The results show that a carbon-based treatment train has lower cost and energy consumption compared to a reverse osmosis-based treatment train. Municipal reuse has lower cost and energy consumption than seawater but higher values than brackish water. The study also highlights the sensitivity of cost metrics to changes in capital cost, on-stream capacity, and plant life. Assessments and scenario analyses can inform reuse adoption and improve cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency.

Zero Liquid Discharge and Water Reuse in Recirculating Cooling Towers at Power Facilities: Review and Case Study Analysis

Sophia L. Plata et al.

Summary: The implementation of ZLD systems in power facilities can reduce water withdrawals by 18%, but would result in a doubling of the levelized cost of water (LCOW) when using high-recovery RO, and even more when using a brine concentrator. Increasing the evaporation pond area does not reduce system costs, as less water is recovered and more is lost to evaporation. If water availability decreases or competition increases, facilities may be incentivized to maximize water recovery from ZLD systems.

Zwitterionic coating on thin-film composite membranes to delay gypsum scaling in reverse osmosis

Humberto Jaramillo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that modifying the RO membrane surface with a zwitterionic polymer brush can effectively delay gypsum surface nucleation and crystal adsorption compared to the control membrane, resulting in a smaller decline in water flux.

Summary: Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) are widely used in wastewater treatment, but challenges such as nitrogen and dissolved methane control, membrane fouling, and high costs need to be addressed to facilitate their application. Efforts to decrease capital and O & M costs associated with dissolved methane nitrogen control and membrane fouling are necessary to improve the wide application of AnMBRs.

Cost of fouling in full-scale reverse osmosis and nanofiltration installations in the Netherlands

M. Jafari et al.

Summary: The economic impact of fouling in spiral wound membranes was investigated by conducting an economic analysis on seven full-scale installations. It was found that fouling cost in RO plants accounted for 24% of operational expenses, while it was only 11% in NF plants due to low biofouling potential of feed water. The major cost factors in fouling were identified as early membrane replacement cost, additional energy cost, and in some cases, downt-time cost during cleaning events.

Low-pressure membrane technology for potable water filtration: true costs

S. J. Judd et al.

Summary: The study determined the total cost of low-pressure membrane filtration for potable water supply in the UK, with findings showing that labor costs increase as flow decreases and unplanned maintenance costs contribute significantly. There is a clear trade-off between investing in supplementary capital to address process upsets and the operational costs associated with such events.

Enhanced Anti-Fouling Behavior and Performance of PES Membrane by UV Treatment

Francesca Russo et al.

Summary: A method for preparing hydrophilic PES membranes with anti-fouling properties was developed by UV-polymerization of PVP on membrane surfaces. The modified membranes showed increased hydrophilicity and improved performance in terms of pure water permeability (PWP) and foulant rejection, making them suitable for wastewater treatment applications. An anti-fouling test using humic acid as a model foulant demonstrated that UV-treated membranes had a recovery efficiency of about 97% compared to a commercial PES membrane.
