Improving Soil Carbon Estimates by Linking Conceptual Pools Against Measurable Carbon Fractions in the DAYCENT Model Version 4.5

Shree R. S. Dangal et al.

Summary: Terrestrial soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics play an important but uncertain role in the global carbon (C) cycle. Current models fail to accurately represent the size, distribution, and flux of SOC. By initializing SOC pools with measurable C fraction data, our study shows more accurate representation of SOC stocks and better prediction of sensitivity to agricultural intensification and warming.

The role of cover crops for cropland soil carbon, nitrogen leaching, and agricultural yields - a global simulation study with LPJmL (V.5.0-tillage-cc)

Vera Porwollik et al.

Summary: Land management practices, such as cover crop cultivation, can mitigate the environmental impact of agriculture, improve productivity, and help sequester carbon. This study assessed the impacts of cover crop practices on sustainable land use and found positive effects on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics, as well as on soybean yield.

The coordination between leaf and fine root litter decomposition and the difference in their controlling factors

Lulu Guo et al.

Summary: The study reveals that plants have evolved a coordinated nutrient supply-and-demand strategy, where high-nutrient-demand plants produce labile leaf and fine root litter that decomposes quickly to meet their nutrient requirements. Although leaf and fine root decomposition are positively correlated, they are also influenced by different combinations of traits, climate, soil conditions, and decomposers, weakening the coordination between leaf and fine root decomposition.

A sustainable development pathway for climate action within the UN 2030 Agenda

Bjoern Soergel et al.

Summary: Current actions are insufficient to achieve both the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Integrated model-based analysis suggests that strong interventions and ambitious lifestyle changes are necessary for real progress. Climate policies, economic development, education, technological progress, and less resource-intensive lifestyles are crucial elements for progress, but additional sustainable development measures are needed to reach the targets.

Soil organic carbon dynamics from agricultural management practices under climate change

Summary: The study reveals that the global cropland SOC stocks are projected to decrease over time, with residue management playing a key role in determining future dynamics. While increases in cropland SOC can be found in some climatic regions, globally, implementing residue retention management systems can help reduce the decline in SOC.

Comparison of uncertainties in land-use change fluxes from bookkeeping model parameterisation

Ana Bastos et al.

Summary: Fluxes from deforestation, land cover changes, and land use practices contributed to approximately 14% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions in 2009-2018. However, accurately estimating F-LUC remains challenging due to uncertainties in calculation methods. Differences between two bookkeeping models (BLUE and HN2017) used in global carbon budget estimates since 2017 are mainly attributed to variations in land-use forcing and model parameterization, affecting carbon emissions intensity and spatial-temporal variability.

SoilGrids 2.0: producing soil information for the globe with quantified spatial uncertainty

Laura Poggio et al.

Summary: SoilGrids generates global maps of soil properties using advanced technology and machine learning methods, incorporating soil observations and environmental factors to predict and analyze various soil properties worldwide. The research shows a good predictive performance for global soil properties, but also reveals the need for more soil observation data, especially in high-latitude regions.
