Shear capacity prediction of FRP-RC beams using single and ensenble ExPlainable Machine learning models

Tadesse G. Wakjira et al.

Summary: Corrosion in steel reinforcement is a major problem causing severe damage to reinforced concrete structures. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is increasingly used as an alternative to steel reinforcement due to its anti-corrosive properties. This paper presents machine learning (ML) models for accurately predicting the shear capacity of FRP-reinforced concrete (FRP-RC) beams and identifying the most important factors influencing the prediction. Among the investigated ML models, the extreme gradient boosting (xgBoost) model showed the best performance and outperformed available code and guideline equations.

Shear behavior of green concrete beams reinforced with basalt FRP bars and stirrups

Abathar Al-Hamrani et al.

Summary: This study examined the shear performance of large-scale GC beams reinforced with BFRP bars and stirrups, showing that higher reinforcement ratios significantly increased ultimate shear capacity. BFRP stirrups reduced diagonal shear crack width and increased ultimate shear capacities, while beams with higher a/d ratios exhibited higher deflection and reduced ultimate shear capacity. The CSA-S806-12 design code provided the most accurate predictions for shear capacity.

Shear strength of plain concrete made of recycled low-strength concrete aggregates and natural aggregates

Khaldoun N. Rahal et al.

Summary: The study found that concrete made with recycled aggregates had lower shear and compressive strengths compared to natural aggregates concrete with similar water to cementitious materials ratios. However, the relationship between push-off shear strength and cube compressive strength was similar for both types of aggregates. Lower water to cementitious materials ratios resulted in smoother failure surfaces, while the use of recycled aggregates slightly affected the failure surfaces. Additionally, a relationship between tensile cracking strength and push-off shear strength for concrete specimens was established.

Evaluating the shear design equations of FRP-reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement

Ahmed H. Ali et al.

Summary: The shear design of FRP-reinforced concrete beams without stirrups was developed based on conventional steel reinforced concrete beams in the 1990s, but since then, significant changes in international design codes led to inconsistencies and lack of agreement. This study aims to refine and unify the shear strength design of such beams, utilizing an extensive experimental database of 510 FRP-reinforced beams from over 67 investigations. Selected design codes and models were used to calculate shear strength, leading to the proposal of a more refined and unified model compared to existing literature models.

Shear strength of 50 MPa longitudinally reinforced concrete beams made with coarse aggregates from low strength recycled waste concrete

Khaldoun N. Rahal et al.

Summary: The study investigated the shear behavior of concrete beams containing recycled coarse aggregates (RCA), finding that the use of RCA did not change the mode of failure or directly affect critical diagonal failure cracks. The recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) beams had higher normalized shear strength compared to natural aggregates concrete (NAC) beams, with a limited difference in strength amongst the various percentages of replacement (PR). Calculated strengths based on various codes were found to be conservative for the RAC beams.

Shear behavior of basalt FRC beams reinforced with basalt FRP bars and glass FRP stirrups: Experimental and analytical investigations

Abathar Al-Hamrani et al.

Summary: The study found that the shear capacity of the beams increased with the addition of basalt macro-fibers and higher reinforcement ratios. Beams reinforced with GFRP stirrups showed significant reductions in ultimate strengths and stiffnesses compared to those with steel stirrups. The predicted shear design capacities of BFRP-BFRC reinforced concrete beams using existing models and code equations showed good correlation with experimental results.

Shear behaviour of RC beams made with natural, recycled aggregate concrete and reclaimed asphalt aggregates under normal and elevated temperature

Enass Alrajfi et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally studied the structural performance of reinforced concrete beams made with different types of concrete under normal and elevated temperatures. The results showed that temperature has a negative impact on the beams' shear strength, load capacity, elastic stiffness, and deflection, with different concrete combinations exhibiting varying responses to temperature effects.

Prediction of Shear Strength of Reinforced Recycled Aggregate Concrete Beams without Stirrups

Monthian Setkit et al.

Summary: This article experimentally and analytically studied the shear strength of reinforced recycled aggregate concrete beams without stirrups. It was found that the shear stresses of RAC beams with certain replacement percentage and longitudinal reinforcement ratio were similar to those of NAC counterparts. It was proposed to apply a reduction factor of 0.75 to the current ACI code equation for an RCA replacement ratio of between 50% and 100% to account for physical variations of RCA.
