Two-dimensional long-period fiber grating sensor for touch applications

Felipe O. Barino et al.

Summary: A two-dimensional force sensor based on a single long-period fiber grating (LPG) is proposed for robotic manipulators grasping control. The force is measured on the fiber transverse section inducing birefringence, splitting the LPG resonant dip into two. By tracking these dips using polarized controlled light and processing the LPG spectra with artificial neural networks, the sensor can estimate an applied force with an error of 0.2148 N and 5.977 degrees.
