The protective effect of melatonin supplementation against taxol-induced testicular cytotoxicity in adult rats

H. R. Aboelwafa et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the toxic effects of taxol on rat testes and the protective impact of melatonin against these effects. The results showed that melatonin could alleviate the damage caused by taxol on the testes by modulating apoptotic factors.

A Brief Overview of Radiation-Induced Effects on Spermatogenesis and Oncofertility

Hisanori Fukunaga et al.

Summary: Translation: Effects of radiation on spermatogenesis and transgenerational effects are reviewed in this article. The review explores novel radiobiological approaches for male fertility preservation during radiotherapy. The genotoxicity of radiation on germ cells and its potential transgenerational effects are discussed. The clinical importance of preserving male fertility during radiation treatment is also addressed. Further research in this field is needed to better understand the potential role of transgenerational effects.

Constant light exposure and/or pinealectomy increases susceptibility to trichloroethylene-induced hepatotoxicity and liver cancer in male mice

Mohamed E. Abdraboh et al.

Summary: Exposure to light at night, pineal gland impairment, and TCE pollution have a significant impact on health, including increased susceptibility to liver toxicity and cancer. Low melatonin levels, constant light exposure, and the combination of these factors increase the toxic and carcinogenic effects of TCE on the liver.

Tunneling nanotubes and mesenchymal stem cells: New insights into the role of melatonin in neuronal recovery

Francesca Luchetti et al.

Summary: Efficient cell-to-cell communication is vital for tissue development and cellular recovery. Tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) are emerging as an important method of cell communication, allowing the transport of cellular components, including mitochondria. Melatonin has been found to enhance mitochondrial fusion, TNT formation, and cell protection, potentially increasing the therapeutic potential of mesenchymal cells (MSCs).

Melatonin promotes male reproductive performance and increases testosterone synthesis in mammalian Leydig cells

Minghui Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that endogenous melatonin can regulate male reproductive function by inhibiting Leydig cell apoptosis, increasing testosterone production, and improving sperm quality. Melatonin exerts these effects by targeting the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway and upregulating testosterone synthesis-related genes in Leydig cells.

ROR: Nuclear Receptor for Melatonin or Not?

Haozhen Ma et al.

Summary: This review delves into the complex relationship between the ROR receptor and melatonin in terms of structure, expression, function, and mechanism. While studies initially suggested that melatonin functions analogous to ROR ligands, some studies have been withdrawn and recent crystallographic evidence does not support the view that ROR is a nuclear receptor of melatonin. Other studies propose that melatonin indirectly regulates ROR activity rather than directly binding to ROR.

Invited Commentary: Ionizing Radiation and Future Reproductive Health-Old Cohorts Still Deserve Attention

Rolv T. Lie

Summary: Public concern over radiation from nuclear weapons or power plants remains, but relevant data to address these concerns are currently scarce. Studies on reproductive health outcomes in survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings show that although exposure levels were high, the overall effects are still weak.
