Two new Penicillium section Sclerotiorum species from sugarcane soil in Brazil

Sergio Murilo Sousa Ramos et al.

Summary: Two new Penicillium species, Penicillium barbosae sp. nov. and Penicillium limae sp. nov., were isolated from soil of sugarcane fields in a deforested area of Atlantic Forest in Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Both species, belonging to section Sclerotiorum, series Adametziorum, exhibit unique morphological features and differ from their phylogenetically closely related relatives. This discovery adds to our understanding of Penicillium biodiversity in tropical agricultural soils.

Floristic change in Brazil's southern Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot: From the Last Glacial Maximum to the late 21st Century

Oliver J. Wilson et al.

Summary: The Atlantic Forest biome in Brazil is a hotspot for biodiversity threatened by habitat loss and climate change. Palaeoecological research can provide important context for understanding the impacts of climate change on plant species. This study models the distribution of key plant species over time and compares them with palaeoecological proxy data, revealing significant compositional changes in plant species over time in the study area.
