Synthesis of Boratrane-pendant Random Copolymers by Side-chain Modification

Akira Takahashi et al.

Summary: Random copolymers with triethanolamine borate (TEAB) groups in the side chains were synthesized and showed superior thermal properties due to the rigid cage structures of TEAB. The pendant TEAB groups were relatively stable to hydrolysis, but quantitatively hydrolyzed in the presence of fluoride anions.

Regio- and sequence-controlled conjugated topological oligomers and polymers via boronate-tag assisted solution-phase strategy

Chaoran Xu et al.

Summary: The authors present a method to synthesize oligomers of controlled sequence and regiochemistry, important in regulating polymer topology and monomer sequence in polymer science. By using MIDA boronates, conjugated polymers with topological variations can be efficiently prepared and purified through precipitation or liquid chromatography. These discrete oligomers can be used for iterative growth to obtain linear or dendrimer-like star polymers, and different conjugated polymers with controlled sequences can be conveniently prepared via condensation polymerization. The optical properties of these polymers are strongly influenced by regiochemistry, offering inspiration for the design of optoelectronic polymeric materials.

ATRP of MIDA Boronate-Containing Monomers as a Tool for Synthesizing Linear Phenolic and Functionalized Polymers

Xin Li et al.

Summary: In this study, MIDA was used to stabilize the reactive organoboron structure for the synthesis of boronate-containing polymers with good control via ICAR ATRP. Compared to polymers prepared by RAFT, polymers prepared by ATRP with halogen end groups are more stable and non-toxic to metal catalysts, providing a more convenient tool for synthesizing various functionalized polymers.

Stereoselective Diels-Alder Reactions of gem-Diborylalkenes: Toward the Synthesis of gem-Diboron-Based Polymers

Nadim Eghbarieh et al.

Summary: Although gem-diborylalkenes are valuable reagents in organic synthesis, their use as dienophile-reactive groups has been rare. The Diels-Alder reactions of gem-diborylalkenes provide an efficient method for stereoselective conversion to access 1,1-bisborylcyclohexenes and other compounds lacking efficient synthetic pathways. DFT calculations provide insight into the factors controlling the selectivity of these reactions, with potential applications in organoboron synthesis and polymerization reactions.

Controlled Radical Polymerization: from Oxygen Inhibition and Tolerance to Oxygen Initiation

Ning Li et al.

Summary: This article introduces a new method - oxygen initiation, which can directly transform molecular oxygen into the initiating carbon radical in CRP, improving oxygen tolerance. RAFT polymerization initiated by oxygen allows for control of the polymerization spatiotemporally under ambient conditions, leading to the synthesis of ultra-high molecular weight polymers.

Radical Reduction of Polymer Chain-End Functionality by Stoichiometric N-Heterocyclic Carbene Boranes

Ning Li et al.

Summary: A novel radical strategy has been developed to remove heteroatom chain ends in polymers synthesized from various CRP approaches, improving their thermal and UV stability. This method is scalable and effective in both organic and aqueous conditions, benefitting from the use of stoichiometric N-heterocyclic carbene borane (NHC-BH3) without additional catalysts or hydrogen sources.

Chemical and Mechanical Tunability of 3D-Printed Dynamic Covalent Networks Based on Boronate Esters

Lindsay L. Robinson et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of catalyst-free, 3D-printing resins using boronate esters, which allow room-temperature exchange at cross-linking sites and modulate the dynamic character of 3D-printed objects for postprinting functionalization. The combination of dynamic and static resins enables a balance between structural stability and rapid exchange in printed parts, with the ability to modulate cross-linking density postprinting.
