Using health insurance claims data from 2018-2019, the average annual incidence of anisakiasis in Japan was estimated to be 19,737 cases. Molecular identification of larvae revealed that the majority (88.4%) of patients were infected with the species Anisakis simplex sensu stricto. Further research is needed to gain insights into the pathogenesis of various forms of anisakiasis.
