The impact of COVID-19 on European tourists' attitudes to air travel and the consequences for tourist destination evoked set formation

Inma Gallego et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of risk conditions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic on tourists' desire to travel, intention to visit, and the destination choice process. The analysis is based on 5134 million flight searches and 379 million flight picks in 2020 from the 17 largest tourism source markets in Europe. An unweighted index is used to measure the average variation of searches and picks in 2020 compared to the reference base period of 2019. The study also analyzes 17 international travel destinations within the evoked sets of the largest outbound markets in Europe (Germany and UK), and identifies the markets most favorable to Spain. The research design can provide insights for cost-efficient marketing decisions in a situation of high uncertainty.
