Microstructure of Lithium Dendrites Revealed by Room-Temperature Electron Microscopy

Wenbo Zhai et al.

Summary: The uncontrolled deposition/dissolution process of lithium dendrites during electrochemical cycling in batteries limits the large-scale application of Li metal anodes. Investigating the microstructure of Li dendrites is a focal point. In this work, the room-temperature microstructure of Li dendrites was obtained by TEM using both vacuum- and inert-gas-transfer methods. Detailed comparison between LT- and room-temperature (RT)-TEM characterizations was provided to show the pros and cons of each method. By using RT-TEM, microstructural evolution of Li dendrites during the electrodeposition/dissolution process, including increase of the quantity of inorganic Li2O compounds in the solid electrolyte interphase, lateral growth behavior, and two types of inactive Li, has been revealed, enriching the understanding of the structure-property relationship of Li dendrites.

Pressure-tailored lithium deposition and dissolution in lithium metal batteries

Chengcheng Fang et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-density Li deposition technique achieved by controlling uniaxial stack pressure to improve the performance of lithium metal batteries, along with proposing a Li morphology testing protocol to maintain the ideal Li deposition morphology. The critical role of stack pressure on Li nucleation, growth, and dissolution processes is elucidated, highlighting the importance of precise control of Li deposition and dissolution.

Ultra-high-voltage Ni-rich layered cathodes in practical Li metal batteries enabled by a sulfonamide-based electrolyte

Weijiang Xue et al.

Summary: The authors have developed a sulfonamide-based electrolyte that allows for stable cycling of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 in lithium metal batteries at a cutoff voltage of 4.7 V, achieving a specific capacity >230 mA h g(-1) and an average Coulombic efficiency >99.65% over 100 cycles. The 4.7 V lithium-metal battery can retain >88% capacity for 90 cycles even under harsh testing conditions, advancing practical lithium-metal batteries.

In Situ Monitoring of Lithium Metal Anodes and Their Solid Electrolyte Interphases by Transmission Electron Microscopy

Chih-Yao Chen et al.

Summary: This study introduces a methodology for observing the relationship between the morphology of lithium metal anodes and the chemistry of the solid electrolyte interphase. The coexistence of LiF and Li3N in the SEI layer is found to prevent dendrite formation during lithium deposition, allowing for the visualization of individual lithium deposits with different microstructures. These findings have potential implications for future energy storage devices.

Strategies towards enabling lithium metal in batteries: interphases and electrodes

Birger Horstmann et al.

Summary: Despite the approaching performance limits of lithium-ion intercalation batteries, research is intensifying on next-generation battery technologies, with a focus on the use of lithium metal anode. However, the poor morphological stability and Coulombic efficiency of the lithium metal anode in liquid electrolytes present challenges for reversible cycling. Experimental and theoretical insights are being used to explore pathways for stable cycling of two-dimensional lithium metal and improvements in understanding lithium metal nucleation and deposition on the nanoscale. Recent advances in electrolytes and SEI design show potential for stable cycling and mitigation of morphological instabilities.
