HbA1c percentiles and the association between BMI, age, gender, puberty, and HbA1c levels in healthy German children and adolescents

Ina Hovestadt et al.

Summary: This study established HbA1c reference values in healthy German children and adolescents based on a large sample size. Age, gender, SES, pubertal stage, and BMI were found to be associated with higher HbA1c levels.

Deep learning-based pancreas volume assessment in individuals with type 1 diabetes

Raphael Roger et al.

Summary: Pancreas volume is reduced in individuals with diabetes and those at risk for developing type 1 diabetes. This study developed a deep learning algorithm for automated pancreas volume measurement in individuals with diabetes. Training the algorithm on multiple cohorts showed high overlap and excellent correlation with manual segmentations.

Oral insulin immunotherapy in children at risk for type 1 diabetes in a randomised controlled trial

Robin Assfalg et al.

Summary: Oral insulin immunotherapy in young children at risk of developing type 1 diabetes was found to be safe, but did not show the anticipated immune response. Preliminary evidence suggests that antibody responses to oral insulin may be more frequent in children with specific INS genotypes, and that inflammatory episodes may influence T cell responses to insulin.

Altered β-Cell Prohormone Processing and Secretion in Type 1 Diabetes

Teresa Rodriguez-Calvo et al.

Summary: Analysis of data from clinical cohorts and human pancreatic tissue suggests that reduced prohormone processing is an early and persistent feature in type 1 diabetes. This article reviews the current knowledge on alterations in islet prohormone expression and processing in type 1 diabetes, discusses their clinical impact, and outlines key next steps for further research. Exploring prohormone processing as a potential biomarker for personalized intervention in the natural history of type 1 diabetes and as a pathogenic anchor for identifying disease-specific endotypes is important for future studies.

Increasing plasma glucose before the development of type 1 diabetes-the TRIGR study

Johnny Ludvigsson et al.

Summary: The study shows that a family history of type 2 diabetes is associated with an increase in blood glucose, and an increase in HbA1c can predict the development of autoantibodies or clinical diabetes. Participants without autoantibodies have lower HbA1c, while increases in blood glucose and HbA1c may be associated with the development of type 1 diabetes.
