This passage discusses the importance of time in queer and cinema studies and how time can be used as an analytic category to explore queer German cinema.
Time has been an important analytic category in both queer and cinema studies. The former has considered how normative life structures abide by their own temporal rhythms unaccommodating of queer body-minds. The latter has examined how the constitutive factors of cinematic mediation often draw their esthetic prowess from the manipulation of time. Recent scholarship on queer cinema studies-in particular work on global queer cinemas-productively engages with considerations of how temporality becomes a central means by which this cinema conveys both the critique of anti-queer structures and the image of better queer futures. This special issue engages with these discourses and brings them together in order to activate time as a generative analytic category for contemporary queer German cinema. The introduction and five articles present various models for how to deploy time strategically in cinematic readings.
