Theory for the Elementary Time Scale of Stress Relaxation in Polymer Nanocomposites

Yuxing Zhou et al.

Summary: We present a microscopic theory for stress relaxation in dense polymer nanocomposites, which is based on the rearrangement of cohesive segment-nanoparticle (NP) bridging complexes. The key dynamical event involves the activated motion of small NPs, allowing the confined segments to relax. The activation energy depends on the NP bridge coordination and potential of mean force barrier, and it shows a nonlinear variation with interfacial cohesion strength and NP concentration. The theory is in excellent agreement with experimental results, and it has implications for other hybrid macromolecular materials.

On the Immobilized Polymer Fraction in Attractive Nanocomposites: Tg Gradient versus Interfacial Layer

Carlos Fernandez-de-Alba et al.

Summary: This study investigates the slowing down of polymer dynamics in nanocomposites, using low-field NMR relaxometry to quantify the fraction of immobilized polymer on filler surfaces. Two different modeling approaches are used to explain the slowing down phenomenon, with NMR results indicating that the segmental relaxation of the immobilized layer is approximately 1 decade slower than in bulk polymer.

Molecular View on Mechanical Reinforcement in Polymer Nanocomposites

Ruikun Sun et al.

Summary: The microscopic origin of mechanical enhancement in polymer nanocomposite (PNC) melts was investigated using rheology and small-angle neutron scattering. It was found that the mechanical reinforcement of PNCs is not due to molecular overstraining, but rather a redistribution of strain field in the polymer matrix. This redistribution is similar to the classical hydrodynamic effect of nanoparticles.

Direct Structural Evidence for Interfacial Gradients in Asymmetric Polymer Nanocomposite Blends

Anne-Caroline Genix et al.

Summary: Understanding the distribution of polymer chains with different masses in hydrogenated and deuterated polymers is crucial for designing their macroscopic properties in nanoparticle-filled polymer blends. The study reveals a qualitatively new large-scale organization of poly(vinyl acetate) chains in nanocomposites with attractive polymer-silica interactions, showing that silica induces bulk segregation and interfacial isotopic enrichment. A quantitative model is developed to describe the bulk segregation and interfacial gradients, indicating non-equilibrium states around NP surfaces with interfacial polymer gradients.

Collective Nanoparticle Dynamics Associated with Bridging Network Formation in Model Polymer Nanocomposites

Benjamin M. Yavitt et al.

Summary: This study investigated the collective dynamics of nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposites and found that nanoparticles are interconnected through polymer bridges to form a network-like microstructure at high loadings. The collective relaxation times of nanoparticles are significantly longer than the diffusion limit of isolated nanoparticles and show a rich dependence on observation wavevector and loading. A mode-coupling theory analysis successfully captured the observed dependencies of collective nanoparticle dynamics, with some quantitative deviations for entangled samples. Additionally, an unusual and weak temperature dependence of collective nanoparticle dynamics was identified, contrasting with the mechanical response.

Best practices and recommendations for accurate nanomechanical characterization of heterogeneous polymer systems with atomic force microscopy

David W. Collinson et al.

Summary: Over the past two decades, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has evolved from an experimental technique for probing simple surface topography to a technology capable of spatially mapping nanoscale material properties with high sensitivity and resolution, especially in extracting nanoscale elastic and viscoelastic data from polymers and other soft materials. However, the lack of clarity on best practices for interpreting nanoscale mechanical data on polymers, along with the presence of multiple phases in samples, poses limitations on the quantitative accuracy of AFM methods and interpretation of mechanical data.
