Paternal transgenerational epigenetic mechanisms mediating stress phenotypes of offspring

Ashley M. Cunningham et al.

Summary: Research suggests that depression and anxiety risk are influenced by genetic, environmental, and epigenetic factors. Paternal stress can have long-lasting effects on offspring, with different impacts on male and female offspring depending on the type of stress.

A history of antimicrobial drugs in animals: Evolution and revolution

Peter Lees et al.

Summary: The evolution of antimicrobial drug (AMD) use in animals over the past eight decades has brought about revolutionary outcomes, with reports on various uses, misuses, and abuses increasing exponentially. While the treatment of animal diseases using AMDs will continue, it is crucial for it to be sustainable within the One Health paradigm and evolve towards more prudent, rational therapeutic uses. This review not only acknowledges concerns about antimicrobial resistance but also highlights the positive aspects and research-based advances resulting from the use of AMDs.

Modeling transfer of vaginal microbiota from mother to infant in early life

Martin Steen Mortensen et al.

Summary: Early-life microbiota, particularly maternal vaginal microbiota, plays a crucial role in shaping the child's microbiota and influencing disease risk. Analysis of mother-child dyads revealed specific bacterial orders that demonstrate persistent or transient transfer patterns from the maternal vaginal microbiome, as well as common reservoir orders shared at later time points regardless of delivery mode.

High-fiber diet mitigates maternal obesity-induced cognitive and social dysfunction in the offspring via gut-brain axis

Xiaoning Liu et al.

Summary: Maternal obesity has been found to be associated with lower cognition and sociality in children. The study demonstrated a causal relationship between microbiota and behavioral changes, and showed that microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids can alleviate behavioral deficits in offspring of obese dams. High dietary fiber intake may be a promising intervention for maternal obesity-induced cognitive and social dysfunctions.

Inter- and Transgenerational Effects of Paternal Exposure to Inorganic Arsenic

Yingyun Gong et al.

Summary: The rise of metabolic disorders in modern times is mainly attributed to the environment, while heritable effects of environmental chemicals on mammalian offspring's metabolic health are unclear. Research has found sex- and generation-specific heritable effects of inorganic arsenic on metabolic physiology, highlighting the importance of gene-environment interactions.

Paternal Dietary Methionine Supplementation Improves Carcass Traits and Meat Quality of Chicken Progeny

Mohamed Shafey Elsharkawy et al.

Summary: The study shows that paternal dietary supplementation with 0.1% methionine can enhance offspring carcass traits and meat quality, such as increasing thigh muscle yield, reducing abdominal fat, and affecting meat quality indicators like pH value and color. Genes associated with meat quality also support these results. The findings suggest that the addition of 0.1% methionine to rooster diets can improve the carcass characteristics and meat quality of progeny.

Gut microbiome heritability is nearly universal but environmentally contingent

Laura Grieneisen et al.

Summary: Analysis of 16,234 gut microbiome profiles from 585 wild baboons collected over 14 years revealed that host genetic effects on the gut microbiome are nearly universal. The study found that 97% of microbiome phenotypes were significantly heritable, with heritability being greater in the dry season, with low diet diversity, and in older hosts. These findings suggest the potential for selection on microbiome characteristics as a host phenotype.

Consequences of Paternal Nutrition on Offspring Health and Disease

Pauline Dimofski et al.

Summary: The paternal diet and environmental exposures during childhood and/or the periconceptional period play a significant role in offspring health, with potential transgenerational consequences. Various paternal feeding patterns can impact progeny's metabolism and health, leading to implications for preventive diet recommendations for future fathers.
