Evidence for distinct isotopic compositions of sap and tissue water in tree stems: consequences for plant water source identification

Adria Barbeta et al.

Summary: Recent studies challenge the hypothesis that the isotopic composition of plant stem water reflects that of source water, with findings of isotopic offsets in woody stems. This study demonstrates that sap water in plant stems mirrors the composition of irrigation water, with no isotopic fractionation during root water uptake, but water in nonconductive xylem tissues is consistently depleted in deuterium. Micrometre-scale heterogeneity in water isotopes within woody stems and soil micro-pores explains source-stem isotopic offsets.

Drought reduces water uptake in beech from the drying topsoil, but no compensatory uptake occurs from deeper soil layers

Arthur Gessler et al.

Summary: The study found that European beech mainly takes up water from the topsoil during the early stages of a drought, reduces water uptake as the drought progresses, and cannot compensate for the reduced topsoil water availability by additional uptake from deeper soil layers. After rewetting following a drought, beech can restore water uptake from the topsoil to pre-drought levels.

A high-temperature water vapor equilibration method to determine non-exchangeable hydrogen isotope ratios of sugar, starch and cellulose

Philipp Schuler et al.

Summary: This study tested the applicability of the hot vapor equilibration method for non-structural carbohydrates and successfully established an analytical protocol. The results showed reproducible δH-2(ne) values in sugars and starch from different sources, with variation among plant types, indicating potential for future research in using δH-2(ne) as a proxy for various environmental and physiological processes in plants.

Isotopic offsets between bulk plant water and its sources are larger in cool and wet environments

Javier De la Casa et al.

Summary: Isotope-based approaches to study plant water sources rely on the assumption that root water uptake and within-plant water transport are non-fractionating processes. However, a growing number of studies have reported offsets between plant and source water stable isotope composition for a wide range of ecosystems. These isotopic offsets can result in the erroneous attribution of source water used by plants and potential overestimations of groundwater uptake by the vegetation.

Isotopic Heterogeneity of Stem Water in Conifers Is Correlated to Xylem Hydraulic Traits and Supports Multiple Residence Times

William H. Bowers et al.

Summary: The isotopic composition of xylem water extracted using cryogenic vacuum distillation (CVD) and pressure chamber (PC) methods were compared in this study. The PC method captured water from the dominant flow network in the xylem, while the CVD method extracted total xylem water that may have a different isotopic composition. The results support the existence of isotopically heterogeneous water pools and suggest that incomplete mixing and variable residence time in xylem conduits contribute to isotopic heterogeneity. Future research should focus on using the PC method to assess the isotopic composition of daily transpiration and investigate species-specific xylem anatomical properties that explain isotopic differences between different xylem water pools.

Correction of cryogenic vacuum extraction biases and potential effects on soil water isotopes application

Mingyi Wen et al.

Summary: Cryogenic vacuum extraction (CVE) is a common method for obtaining soil water for isotopic analysis, but recent studies have shown biases in the results. This study introduces a method to correct these biases and assesses their impact on conclusions in hydrology. The results suggest that correction equations for CVE-obtained delta H-2 and delta O-18 are necessary to improve the accuracy of isotopic applications in soil hydrology.

More than climate: Hydrogen isotope ratios in tree rings as novel plant physiological indicator for stress conditions

Marco M. Lehmann et al.

Summary: The analysis of stable carbon and oxygen isotopes in tree-rings is a common method to study past climatic conditions and tree physiological responses to environmental changes. While hydrogen isotopic signature in tree-rings is less utilized due to poor correlation with climate, recent studies have shown its potential in revealing physiological information during stressful periods, independently of biotic and abiotic factors.
