Dominance of Cyclobutadienyl Over Cyclopentadienyl in the Crystal Field Splitting in Dysprosium Single-Molecule Magnets

James P. Durrant et al.

Summary: Replacing the ligands in dysprosium single-molecule magnets with a different type leads to larger energy barriers to magnetization reversal. The distances between the ligands in the new complexes suggest a different crystal field splitting. Theoretical analysis shows that the magnetic axes in the ground Kramers doublets are oriented towards the new ligands. Introducing new parameters allows for comparisons between different single-molecule magnets, indicating the potential for improved performance in the new system.

Using N-Heterocyclic Carbenes as Weak Equatorial Ligands to Design Single-Molecule Magnets: Zero-Field Slow Relaxation in Two Octahedral Dysprosium(III) Complexes

Jerome Long et al.

Summary: We report the synthesis, structures, and magnetic investigations of two new octahedral dysprosium complexes based on the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) tridentate bis(phenoxide) ligand. These complexes exhibit suitable features for slow relaxation of magnetization by utilizing the short Dy-O distances in the axial direction and the weak donor ability of the NHC moiety.

Tuning the Equatorial Negative Charge in Hexagonal Bipyramidal Dysprosium(III) Single-Ion Magnets to Improve the Magnetic Behavior

Xingwei Cai et al.

Summary: By taking advantage of pentaethylene glycol and deprotonation of pentaethylene glycol, a new family of structurally hexagonal bipyramidal Dy(III) complexes were synthesized and characterized. Magnetic measurements showed different magnetic behaviors among the complexes, with complex 1 exhibiting zero-field single-ion magnet behavior and complexes 2 and 3 showing slow magnetic relaxation only under an external magnetic field. Detailed calculations revealed that the equatorial negative charge and axial ligands play a crucial role in the magnetic anisotropy and quantum tunneling. The absence of equatorial negative charge should be considered in the rational design of promising single molecular magnets based on oblate ions.

Ultrahard magnetism from mixed-valence dilanthanide complexes with metal-metal bonding

Colin A. Gould et al.

Summary: Mixed-valence dilanthanide complexes with a singly occupied lanthanide-lanthanide sigma-bonding orbital were reported, showing outstanding magnetic properties due to the strong alignment of the sigma-bonding and f electrons on both lanthanides. The combination of a well-isolated high-spin ground state and large magnetic anisotropy in (Cp-iPr5)(2)Dy2I3 results in an enormous coercive magnetic field at high temperatures.

Tetraanionic arachno-Carboranyl Ligand Imparts Strong Axiality to Terbium(III) Single-Molecule Magnets

Peng-Bo Jin et al.

Summary: In this study, a family of fully sandwiched arachno-lanthanacarborane complexes were successfully synthesized and their magnetic properties were thoroughly investigated. It was found that the crystal field effect imposed by the ligand influences the energy gaps between ground and excited states in the order of Tb > Dy > Ho > Er. Furthermore, the Tb analogue of this complex family exhibits a high energy barrier to magnetization reversal, observable hysteresis loop up to 4 K, and a relaxation time of 193(17) seconds at 2 K, which sets a new benchmark for Tb3+-based single-molecule magnets.

Emerging Trends on Designing High-Performance Dysprosium(III) Single-Molecule Magnets

Tesfay G. Ashebr et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the recent trends in key synthetic strategies for achieving exotic magnetic properties and provides representative seminal reports. Special emphasis is given to monomeric high-performance Dy(III)-SMMs realized through crystal field, predominant bond, and organometallic approaches, as well as stimulating reports on endometallofullerenes and radical-bridged systems with strong magnetic coupling. The role of spin-vibration coupling in magnetic relaxation is also highlighted. More demanding theoretical studies are anticipated to predict promising molecules with magnetization blocking at practical temperatures.

Ab Initio Prediction of High-Temperature Magnetic Relaxation Rates in Single-Molecule Magnets

Daniel Reta et al.

Summary: Organometallic molecules based on [Dy(Cp-R)(2)](+) cations have shown potential as high-temperature single-molecule magnets, with significant variations in magnetic properties observed among structurally similar molecules, highlighting the importance of understanding magneto-structural relationships for more efficient design strategies. Our study developed an ab initio spin dynamics methodology capable of quantitatively predicting relaxation rates and revealed that differences in relaxation dynamics among [Dy(Cp-R)(2)](+) cations are mainly determined by crystal field splitting rather than spin-vibrational coupling. Additionally, our predictions suggest an upper limit to the effective barrier to magnetic relaxation, indicating that further improvements to monometallic single-molecule magnets may require shifting vibrational modes off-resonance with electronic excitations.

The evolution of SMMs has involved the study of various routes towards high performance materials, with each route essential for understanding the quantum dynamics behind these molecules.
