Weakly Nonlinear Ekman Pumping in the Sri Lanka Dome and Southwest Monsoon Current

Kerstin Cullen et al.

Summary: The Sri Lanka Dome is a cyclonic recirculation feature in the Southwest Monsoon Current system in the southern Bay of Bengal. Cooler sea surface temperature in the vicinity is often referred to as the Bay of Bengal Cold Pool. Previous studies have attributed the spatial SST pattern to lateral advection. In this analysis, the authors explore the role of weakly nonlinear vorticity Ekman pumping in explaining the cooling and changes in sea level height in the southwest Bay of Bengal.

Statistical characteristics and thermohaline properties of mesoscale eddies in the Bay of Bengal

Wei Cui et al.

Summary: The statistical characteristics and vertical thermohaline properties of mesoscale eddies in the Bay of Bengal were studied using satellite altimetry data and Argo profiles. Eddies predominantly exist in the western part of the Bay of Bengal and tend to propagate westward. Long-lived eddies, especially cyclones, show a clear preference for southward (equatorward) movement, with different north-south preferences seen in various areas of the bay.
