Following the damage: Increasing western barbastelle bat activity in bark beetle infested stands in Bialowieza Primeval forest

Alek Rachwald et al.

Summary: The study found a positive correlation between the number of Norway spruces infested by spruce bark beetles and the activity of western barbastelle bats, with a lag of 1-2 years. This is likely due to the decomposition process in standing dead spruces. Salvage logging and dead spruce removal in stands infested by bark beetle may negatively impact the western barbastelle population.

Canopy temperatures of selected tree species growing in the forest and outside the forest using aerial thermal infrared (3.6-4.9 μm) data

Agata Zakrzewska et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that thermal remote sensing data has high potential for application in environmental analyses. The main objective of this study was to determine the variability of tree canopy temperatures using a new sensor that acquires data in the thermal spectral range of 3.6-4.9 μm, which is rarely used. The findings of the study showed that trees growing in the forest are generally cooler than trees outside the forest, and different tree species have statistically different canopy temperatures. The study also demonstrated that a thermal spectral range of 3.6-4.9 μm can accurately measure the canopy temperature of tree species, supporting its use in remote sensing vegetation studies.

Detection of Yunnan Pine Shoot Beetle Stress Using UAV-Based Thermal Imagery and LiDAR

Jingxu Wang et al.

Summary: This study assesses the potential of using thermal infrared (TIR) data to determine stand density reduction (SDR) under different Leaf Area Index (LAI) conditions. The results show that the prediction accuracy of SDR from canopy surface temperature (CST) is promising at high LAI values but decreases quickly with LAI. The study also finds a significant negative correlation between CST and LAI, both at the single-tree scale and plot scale. The leaf area index (LAI) affects the transmission paths of sunlight and sensor, disturbing the relationship between CST and SDR.

Mapping European Spruce Bark Beetle Infestation at Its Early Phase Using Gyrocopter-Mounted Hyperspectral Data and Field Measurements

Florian M. Hellwig et al.

Summary: This study investigates the early detection of spruce infestation by bark beetles using hyperspectral data, showing a new index with high accuracy and ability to detect more infested spruces. The index demonstrates great potential in the red-edge domain for distinguishing infested spruces at an early stage, with applications in forest preservation strategies.

MONITORING OF THE SEASONAL DEVELOPMENT OF IPID BARK BEETLE (IPS ACUMINATUS) IN SCOTS PINE STANDS BY REMOTE SENSING

Tetiana Kuchma et al.

Summary: The research aimed to estimate the impact of environmental factors on the seasonal development of apical bark beetle in Scots pine stands in Ukrainian Polissya, and evaluate the infestation of forest ecosystems. Weather and climate were found to be the most important factors influencing the population dynamics and invasion intensity of the bark beetle. Favorable climate conditions led to the development of more than two generations of I. acuminatus per year in Ukrainian Polissya, changing the attack strategy.
