Sustainable Ammonia Synthesis from Nitrogen and Water by One-Step Plasma Catalysis

Tianqi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates successful ammonia synthesis from nitrogen and water using nonthermal plasma catalysis. The findings suggest that plasma-induced vibrational excitation and matched catalysts in the nonthermal plasma discharge reactor contribute to molecular dissociation. The results show that the ruthenium catalyst supported on magnesium oxide exhibits superior performance in ammonia production. This research highlights the potential of nonthermal plasma catalysis for sustainable ammonia production.

Improving the Energy Yield of Plasma-Based Ammonia Synthesis with In Situ Adsorption

Kevin H. R. Rouwenhorst et al.

Summary: Plasma-induced ammonia decomposition in the plasma phase severely limits the energy efficiency of plasma-based ammonia synthesis. However, using zeolite 4A as an adsorbent for in situ ammonia removal can suppress the product decomposition and increase the ammonia yield. The use of in situ product removal is important for plasma chemistry and plasma catalysis in general due to the general phenomenon of product decomposition in the plasma.

Direct Oxidative Nitrogen Fixation from Air and H2O by a Water Falling Film Dielectric Barrier Discharge Reactor at Ambient Pressure and Temperature

Zhuo Liu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a nitrogen fixation process using non-thermal plasma, which directly oxidizes nitrogen to produce HNO3 without the formation of NH3 intermediate. By optimizing the plasma reaction conditions, high synthesis rate, low energy consumption, and good product selectivity were achieved simultaneously.

NOx synthesis by atmospheric-pressure N2/O2 filamentary DBD plasma over water: Physicochemical mechanisms of plasma-liquid interactions

Nepal C. Roy et al.

Summary: The study investigates the physicochemical mechanisms of plasma-liquid surface interactions for NOx synthesis by producing atmospheric-pressure filamentary dielectric barrier discharge plasma over deionized water. Gas-phase plasma diagnostics were performed using optical emission spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and voltage-current curve recordings, while liquid-phase species were analyzed using ion chromatography and UV-visible spectrophotometer. Findings show that reaction pathways for reactive oxygen and nitrogen species formation in deionized water depend on different experimental conditions, with nitrite conversion to nitrates significantly influenced by reactive oxygen species. The energy yield for NOx synthesis ranges from 1.3 x 10(-4) to 3.4 x 10(-3) mol/MJ.

Denitrification in wetlands: A review towards a quantification at global scale

Columba Martinez-Espinosa et al.

Summary: Research on the nitrogen cycle has shown that the production of reactive nitrogen globally exceeds the natural ecosystem's capacity for removal through denitrification, leading to negative impacts on the environment and human health. Wetland ecosystems play a significant role in denitrification, but uncertainties remain in quantifying the denitrification capacity of natural wetlands globally.

Ammonia and Nitric Acid Demands for Fertilizer Use in 2050

Jeonghoon Lim et al.

Summary: Access to nitrogen-based fertilizers is crucial for maximizing agricultural yield, but the production process contributes significantly to carbon emissions. The market size and value of ammonia and nitric acid will be heavily influenced by the growing global population and food demand over the next three decades. Developing carbon-free technologies for nitrogen and nitrate reduction to meet fertilizer manufacturing demands is essential to address the environmental impact of current production methods.

Reducing energy cost of in situ nitrogen fixation in water using an arc-DBD combination

Duy Khoe Dinh et al.

Summary: The study presents a sustainable method of fixing nitrogen using air plasma, mimicking the natural lightning-based nitrogen fixation process. A hybrid plasma system was developed to completely convert gaseous NOx and O-3 into reactive nitrogen species in water, reducing the energy cost for nitrate production and enhancing the potential for sustainable agricultural development.

N2 oxidation kinetics in a ns-pulsed discharge above a liquid electrode

Mikhail Gromov et al.

Summary: The study investigates the kinetics of nitrogen fixation via plasma-induced N-2 oxidation in different pulse regimes and how different radical densities contribute to the process. It is found that in burst mode, the energy efficiency of NO formation decreases despite higher N-2 conversion due to NO removal, NO oxidation, and pre-ionization effects.

Evidence of near-the-limit energy cost NO formation in atmospheric spark discharge

Nikolay Britun et al.

Summary: A very low energy cost for NO radical formation in atmospheric spark discharge has been reported, with the minimum EC achieved in the spark regime before the transition and the maximum NO yield in the glow regime. The low EC is associated with discharge non-equilibrium caused by short spark duration.
