Why Do People Stay Poor?*

Clare Balboni et al.

Summary: This study explores two views on poverty and finds that the poverty traps view is more supported. Through an asset transfer experiment, the research discovers that when initial assets of impoverished households exceed a certain threshold, they are able to accumulate wealth, change occupations, and escape poverty. Additionally, the structural estimation of an occupational choice model reveals that eliminating misallocation can bring significant gains.

Are There Too Many Farms in the World? Labor Market Transaction Costs, Machine Capacities, and Optimal Farm Size

The Macroeconomics of Microfinance

Francisco J. Buera et al.

Summary: The study found that microfinance increases output and capital in the short run, but leads to a decrease in total factor productivity. However, in the long run, considering general equilibrium effects, scaling up microfinance has minimal impact on per-capita income due to the offsetting effect of higher TFP and lower capital accumulation. Nevertheless, the vast majority of the population benefits directly and indirectly from microfinance.

CAPITAL OBSOLESCENCE AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY

Julieta Caunedo et al.

Summary: The study argues that considering capital-embodied technology increases the importance of capital in explaining cross-country differences in agricultural labor productivity. New capital is more expensive in richer countries, and the quality of capital affects the adoption of capital-embodied technology. Adjusting for quality nearly doubles the importance of capital in accounting for cross-country differences in agricultural labor productivity.
