On similarity

Luciano da F. Costa

Summary: The objective quantification of similarity between mathematical or physical structures is crucial in the physical sciences and technology. This work presents a systematic approach using multiple similarity indices, starting with the Kronecker delta function for strict similarity quantification. The study explores various indices such as cosine similarity, correlation, Sorensen-Dice, and Jaccard indices, and extends them to multisets, vectors, and real functions. The results highlight the formulation of similarity indices and the application of these indices in pattern recognition and object identification, demonstrating the potential of the proposed concepts and methods. The characterization of eigenmodes and the enhanced potential of the coincidence index are also addressed.

A similarity approach to cities and features

Luciano da F. Costa et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the structure of 20 European cities and maps them into different networks based on their similarity. The results show that cities from the same country tend to be more similar. Additionally, different features combinations lead to the identification of main models for the cities.

Identification of city motifs: a method based on modularity and similarity between hierarchical features of urban networks

Guilherme S. Dominguese et al.

Summary: This study presents a methodology for automatically identifying motifs in street networks, obtained from city plans. The identified motifs are characterized and discussed from various perspectives, and the impact of the adopted features on the networks is analyzed. Additionally, a simple supervised learning method is introduced for assigning reference motifs to cities.
