Dynamical topological phase realized in a trapped-ion quantum simulator

Philipp T. Dumitrescu et al.

Summary: Emerging programmable quantum simulation platforms provide unprecedented access to far-from-equilibrium quantum many-body dynamics in isolated systems. This study demonstrates a dynamically protected topological phase in a quasiperiodically driven array of ten Yb-171(+) hyperfine qubits. The phase exhibits edge qubits that are immune to control errors and external perturbations, relying on emergent dynamical symmetries. This work paves the way for implementing more complex dynamical topological orders that enable error-resilient manipulation of quantum information.

Many-body localization with quasiperiodic driving

David M. Long et al.

Summary: This study investigates the many-body localization phenomenon in static and periodically driven interacting chains. It is found that randomly disordered many-body localization exists for D = 2, but not for D ≥ 3. The study also reveals that two-tone driving can result in new topological orders with edge signatures, and localization can protect these orders indefinitely.

Topological edge modes without symmetry in quasiperiodically driven spin chains

Aaron J. Friedman et al.

Summary: We construct an example of a 1d quasiperiodically driven spin chain that has edge states protected by a combination of localization, dynamics, and topology. The protection of the edge states is purely based on emergent dynamical symmetries, rather than microscopic symmetry protection. We investigate the dynamical signatures of this emergent dynamical symmetry-protected topological (EDSPT) order through computational methods and find evidence of its stability against bulk many-body localization.
