Laser Frequency Combs with Fast Gain Recovery: Physics and Applications

Marco Piccardo et al.

Summary: Semiconductor lasers with fast gain dynamics are known to produce frequency-modulated output, with quantum cascade lasers being ideal representatives in this class. Understanding of frequency comb regimes in these lasers has evolved from simpler arguments to more advanced theories like Kerr nonlinearity and linewidth enhancement factor. New types of frequency combs have emerged, sparking renewed interest and raising new questions in the field of quantum cascade lasers.

Analytical theory of frequency-modulated combs: generalized mean-field theory, complex cavities, and harmonic states

Levi Humbard et al.

Summary: In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of FM combs in order to calculate their significant properties. The analysis was based on the development of a general procedure for constructing mean-field theories. Our findings showed that the FM chirp of arbitrary Fabry-Perot cavities, which is crucial for realistic lasers, is affected by finite gain bandwidth and linewidth enhancement in fast gain media. Additionally, we demonstrated that an eigenvalue formulation of the laser's dynamics can be useful for characterizing all stable states of the laser.

Real-time multimode dynamics of terahertz quantum cascade lasers via intracavity self-detection: observation of self mode-locked population pulsations

Hua Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of multimode THz QCLs using a self-detection technique combined with a real-time oscilloscope. A self-starting periodic modulation of the laser current is observed, and two distinct regimes of oscillation with different coherence times are identified depending on the drive current. The measurements are interpreted using effective semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch equations, revealing the phase relationship between carrier density and optical pulses.

Soliton dynamics of ring quantum cascade lasers with injected signal

Franco Prati et al.

Summary: Nonlinear interactions in physical systems can lead to symmetry breaking phenomena such as modulation instabilities, which may result in the formation of optical solitons. The generalized Lugiato-Lefever equation predicts the existence of optical solitons in ring quantum cascade lasers with an external driving field, enabling the bistability mechanism. The study also shows the possibility of phase solitons and cavity solitons formation in the driven emitter, making them promising for applications such as frequency combs and encoding information.

Self-starting harmonic comb emission in THz quantum cascade lasers

Andres Forrer et al.

Summary: Harmonic comb states have been found to be prevalent in mid-IR quantum cascade lasers. This study reports on robust, pure, self-starting harmonic mode locking in Copper-based double-metal THz quantum cascade lasers, which can excite different harmonic orders and show stable harmonic combs spanning over 600GHz. The devices can be RF injected, and the free running coherence is assessed using a self-mixing technique performed at 50GHz.
