Prolonged oral antimicrobial administration prevents doxorubicin-induced loss of active intestinal stem cells

Breanna J. Sheahan et al.

Summary: Acute intestinal mucositis is a common side effect of chemotherapy, and recent evidence suggests that the presence of enteric bacteria influences the extent of damage to jejunal epithelial cells. In this study, it was found that in mice without microbiota, chemotherapy led to a decrease in intestinal stem cells, while mice treated to remove microbiota retained these cells. It was discovered that microbiota sends a pro-survival signal to the stem cells, which helps maintain their presence in the face of chemotherapy-induced injury. This finding highlights the potential of manipulating enteric microbiota as a therapeutic target for reducing the severity of chemotherapy-associated mucositis.

Inflammation-targeted cannabidiol-loaded nanomicelles for enhanced oral mucositis treatment

Yingke Liu et al.

Summary: Oral mucositis (OM) is a common complication of cancer chemotherapy, and its treatment is challenging. In this study, we developed nanomicelles that target inflammation and loaded them with the anti-inflammatory drug cannabidiol (CBD). These nanomicelles showed improved accumulation and retention of CBD, and demonstrated better anti-inflammatory effects compared to free CBD in both local and systemic administration. They also accelerated healing and inhibited inflammatory cell infiltration and transcription. Overall, CBD-loaded nanomicelles show promise for OM treatment.
