Analysis of causal relations of marine accidents during ship navigation under pilotage: A DEMATEL approach

S. M. Esad Demirci et al.

Summary: Marine accidents cause irreversible losses for life, property, and the environment. Marine pilotage plays a crucial role in navigation safety, but accidents can still happen even with a pilot on board. This study identified 32 factors contributing to ship accidents using accident investigation reports and expert opinion, and analyzed their causal relations using the DEMATEL method. The findings showed that human and ship-related factors were the most significant categories in accidents under pilotage, with crew training, ship condition, and master and pilot experience having the most critical effect on accident occurrence. Effective collaboration between the master and pilot is crucial for safe navigation.

Summary: With the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT), industries have the potential to explore pan-industry business opportunities. However, most industries are still at the initial stages of IoT adoption. This study uses a hybrid method and identifies the critical factors influencing IoT adoption, and examines its impact on the performance of manufacturing companies. The findings can guide the development of IoT adoption guidelines for maximum efficiency in manufacturing industries, service providers, and governments.

Rethinking performance measurement models using a fuzzy logic system approach: a performative exploration on ownership in waste management

Alessandra Tafuro et al.

Summary: The literature on performance measurement in waste management service often lacks methods and models that consider multiple dimensions simultaneously. This study proposes a performance measurement model that considers profitability, financial characteristics, and efficiency using fuzzy logic expert system. By analyzing the waste management service in 106 Italian provincial capitals, the study finds that public owned companies generally perform better than private or mixed ownerships, and cities that entrust the service to the same company do not necessarily have adjacent positions in the ranking. The proposed model can help public administrators control outcomes, make decisions, and compare waste management services objectively.

A hybrid MCDM model based on DEMATEL and ANP for improving the measurement of corporate sustainability indicators: A study of Taiwan High Speed Rail

Shu-Hua Rao

Summary: This study aimed to improve sustainability measurement of indicators using CSR reports, examine the interaction between indicators, and analyze performance trend towards set CSR goals. Regular review and identification of key indicators by managers is essential for long-term performance goals and business decision-making in the transportation industry. Most selected indicators suffer from technical limitations due to independent measurement dimensions, which results in inadequate measurement of CS/CSR.
