Fate of Carbonates in the Earth's Mantle (10-136 GPa)

Jing Gao et al.

Summary: The study reviews the significant progress made in the field of crystal chemistry of carbonates and identifies new stable polymorphs of carbonates under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. It highlights processes such as the release of CO2 from slabs by carbonate reacting with silicates and the generation of super-deep diamonds in the metal-saturated mantle.

Size-Dependent Nucleation in Crystal Phase Transition from Machine Learning Metadynamics

Pedro A. Santos-Florez et al.

Summary: This Letter presents a framework that combines machine learning potential (MLP) and metadynamics to investigate solid-solid phase transition. A scalable MLP model based on spectral descriptors and neural networks regression is developed to accurately interpolate the energy surface where two phases coexist. By applying it to the simulation of B4-B1 phase transition of GaN under 50 GPa with different model sizes, the sequential change of the phase transition mechanism from collective modes to nucleation and growths is observed, demonstrating the importance of statistical sampling with large system size in phase transition modeling.

Metastable structures of CaCO3 and their role in transformation of calcite to aragonite and postaragonite

Pavel N. Gavryushkin et al.

Summary: By using molecular dynamics simulation and evolutionary metadynamic calculations, a series of structures were discovered with enthalpies and Gibbs energies lower than aragonite but higher than calcite, suggesting a two-step mechanism for the transformation between the two minerals. Additionally, analysis of high-pressure polymorphs of CaCO3 and a topological assessment shed light on the evolution of the CaCO3 cation array during the transition from aragonite to calcite.

Crystal Structure of BaCa(CO3)2 Alstonite Carbonate and Its Phase Stability upon Compression

Raquel Chulia-Jordan et al.

Summary: New research reveals that the crystal chemistry of the CaO-BaO-CO2 system is more complex than previously believed, with BaCa(CO3)(2) alstonite structure showing unique characteristics at ambient conditions and high pressures. Under pressure, alstonite undergoes structural changes, transitioning to a monoclinic phase at 9 GPa and experiencing a second phase transition at 24 GPa. These changes result in an increase in the coordination number of Ba atoms. The equation of state of alstonite was determined, and comparisons were made with other carbonates to investigate the relative stability of BaCa(CO3)(2) polymorphs.

Nucleating a Different Coordination in a Crystal under Pressure: A Study of the B1-B2 Transition in NaCl by Metadynamics

Matej Badin et al.

Summary: The proposed NPT metadynamics simulation scheme allows studying pressure-induced structural phase transitions beyond the collective mechanism. By using coordination number and volume as collective variables, the scheme can observe transformations proceeding via nucleation and growth, revealing different transition mechanisms for smaller vs. larger systems. This approach is likely applicable to a broader class of pressure-induced structural transitions, enabling study of complex nucleation effects and bringing simulations closer to realistic conditions.
