Superfluid effective field theory for dark matter direct detection

Konstantin Matchev et al.

Summary: We propose an effective field theory (EFT) framework to simulate the interactions among quasiparticles, helium atoms, and probe particles in superfluid He-4. The decay and scattering rates for relevant processes involving quasiparticles and helium atoms are presented. This study is significant for understanding the dynamics of thermalization in superfluids and for the direct detection of sub-GeV dark matter using superfluid He-4.

Phonon background from gamma rays in sub-GeV dark matter detectors

Kim Berghaus et al.

Summary: This study investigates the scattering of high-energy photons from radioactive contaminants in solid-state target materials and their impact on the low-energy background for sub-GeV dark matter direct-detection searches. The results show that this background is most noticeable for energy deposits in the 1-100 meV range and requires active measures to suppress it.

Phonon-mediated Migdal effect in semiconductor detectors

Zheng-Liang Liang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method for probing sub-GeV dark matter particles in semiconductors using phonons as an effective degree of freedom for the Migdal effect. Under the incoherent approximation, this approach effectively enhances the sensitivities of semiconductor targets towards the MeV dark matter mass region.

PYTHON package for dark matter scattering in dielectric targets

Simon Knapen et al.

Summary: DarkELF is a PYTHON package that calculates the interaction rates of light dark matter in dielectric materials, taking into account screening effects. The package parametrizes the full response of the material in terms of the energy loss function (ELF), which is then converted into differential scattering rates for direct dark matter electron scattering and through the Migdal effect. It can also calculate the rate of phonon production from sub-MeV dark matter scattering via the dark photon mediator, as well as the absorption rate for dark matter composed of dark photons.

Directional detectability of dark matter with single phonon excitations: Target comparison

Ahmet Coskuner et al.

Summary: Single phonon excitations are sensitive probes for keV-GeV dark matter, with directional dependence and daily modulation in anisotropic target materials. Al2O3 (sapphire), CaWO4, and h-BN (hexagonal boron nitride) are highlighted as the best polar materials for recovering daily modulation signals.

Dark Matter Detection with Bound Nuclear Targets: The Poisson Phonon Tail

Yonatan Kahn et al.

Summary: Dark matter scattering with nuclei in solid-state systems can produce elastic nuclear recoil at high energies and single-phonon excitation at low energies. By studying a simplified model, it is found that low-threshold calorimetric detectors may have increased sensitivity to sub-GeV dark matter, providing insight into experimental milestones for cosmological dark matter production.

Describing the Migdal effect with a bremsstrahlung-like process and many-body effects

Zheng-Liang Liang et al.

Summary: Recent theoretical studies have shown that recoiled atoms struck by dark matter particles are more likely to excite or lose electrons than previously thought, opening up a new avenue for exploring sub-GeV dark matter particles. By incorporating the bremsstrahlung process and electronic many-body effects, a full description of the Migdal effect in bulk semiconductor targets like diamond and silicon has been achieved, with significantly larger event rates in the low energy regime. Additionally, it was found that the effect of bremsstrahlung photons mediating the Coulomb interaction between recoiled ions and electron-hole pairs is equivalent to the exchange of a single phonon.

Directional detection of light dark matter from three-phonon events in superfluid 4He

Andrea Caputo et al.

Summary: This study presents a new signature for detecting light dark matter with superfluid He-4, involving the emission of three phonons. Below the MeV mass region, the kinematics of this process can reconstruct the dark matter interaction vertex while offering background rejection through coincidence requirements and directionality. The theoretical tools for dealing with this observable are developed, and the associated differential distributions are computed.
