The NASA Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) Mission Imaging the Chemistry of the Global Atmosphere

Chelsea R. Thompson et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of the NASA Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) mission and a summary of selected scientific findings to date. ATom was an airborne measurements and modeling campaign aimed at characterizing the composition and chemistry of the troposphere over the most remote regions of the Pacific, Southern, Atlantic, and Arctic Oceans, and examining the impact of anthropogenic and natural emissions on a global scale. ATom data provide crucial insights into global air quality and climate change by understanding the range of chemical species and their reactions in the remote atmosphere. Through extensive measurements and modeling, ATom has yielded significant early findings.

Anthropogenic emission is the main contributor to the rise of atmospheric methane during 1993-2017

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: Research suggests that the continued rise in atmospheric methane concentration is mainly attributed to increased anthropogenic emissions, particularly from agriculture, waste management, and industrial fossil fuel sources. Wetland emissions have the least contribution to the increase. The current wetland methane models cannot explain the decrease in atmospheric δC-13-CH4 values.

Improved global wetland carbon isotopic signatures support post-2006 microbial methane emission increase

Youmi Oh et al.

Summary: This study calculates the isotopic composition of global wetland methane emissions using a model and finds that tropical wetland emissions have higher isotopic composition compared to boreal wetlands. The improved atmospheric simulation suggests that the increase in atmospheric methane since 2007 is due to rising microbial emissions.

Variational inverse modeling within the Community Inversion Framework v1.1 to assimilate δ13C(CH4) and CH4: a case study with model LMDz-SACS

Joel Thanwerdas et al.

Summary: This study presents a new variational inverse modeling framework that assimilates both CH4 and δC-13(CH4) observations, and optimizes emissions and source signatures of multiple emission categories at the pixel scale. The results show that assimilating δC-13(CH4) observations can significantly change global flux estimates for wetlands, agriculture and waste, fossil fuels, and biofuels-biomass burning categories.

Methyl Chloroform Continues to Constrain the Hydroxyl (OH) Variability in the Troposphere

P. K. Patra et al.

Summary: The study uses observations and simulation models to derive anomalies in the inverse lifetime of CH3CCl3 in the troposphere, revealing that the reaction rate of CH3CCl3 in the atmosphere is influenced by both physical and chemical factors. It explains that the changes in K-G are mainly driven by global variations in OH sources and sinks and chemical effects, showing significant positive trends and year-to-year fluctuations.

Improved Constraints on Global Methane Emissions and Sinks Using δ13C-CH4

X. Lan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the drivers behind the global atmospheric methane increase after 2006 by simulating emission and sink scenarios in a tracer transport model. Fossil fuel emissions were unlikely to be the main driver for the post-2006 methane increase, and a decrease in hydroxyl radicals could not explain the observed increase. Different methane sinks have varying fractionation factors for delta C-13 methane, introducing uncertainty in the results.

Summary: Isotope ratio measurements face challenges due to the instability of composition in reference samples. A calibration-free method using infrared spectroscopy is now providing accurate measurements traceable to International System of Units standards. Efforts are underway to elucidate the stable carbon isotope ratio of Vienna PeeDee Belemnite, with independent measurement techniques required to support it.

Global Uptake of Atmospheric Methane by Soil From 1900 to 2100

Fabiola Murguia-Flores et al.

Summary: Soil methanotrophy is a vital process in removing methane from the atmosphere, with global uptake expected to increase significantly in the coming decades. Temperature is becoming a more important factor influencing soil methanotrophy rates, while nitrogen inputs and soil moisture also play significant roles regionally. These findings highlight the complexities of the soil sink response to various environmental drivers beyond just atmospheric methane levels.

Global tropospheric halogen (Cl, Br, I) chemistry and its impact on oxidants

Xuan Wang et al.

Summary: An updated mechanism for tropospheric halogen chemistry in the GEOS-Chem model improves the efficiency of recycling and mobilization of bromine radicals, resulting in a lower global mean tropospheric BrO mixing ratio of 0.19 ppt. Model simulations show that Cl atoms contribute 0.8% of the global oxidation of methane. The study highlights the importance of halogen chemistry in influencing tropospheric oxidants and ozone concentrations.

Accelerating methane growth rate from 2010 to 2017: leading contributions from the tropics and East Asia

Yi Yin et al.

Summary: The atmospheric methane growth rate stagnated in the early 2000s, but has been positive since 2007 with a significant acceleration starting in 2014, likely due to an increase in global CH4 emissions, with leading contributions from tropical wetlands and anthropogenic emissions in China. This surge in atmospheric growth rate has not been observed since the 1980s and corresponds to unprecedented global total CH4 emissions.

Attribution of the accelerating increase in atmospheric methane during 2010-2018 by inverse analysis of GOSAT observations

Yuzhong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducts a global inverse analysis of 2010-2018 GOSAT observations to understand the factors controlling atmospheric methane. The results show discrepancies in prior estimates of fuel-related emissions and significant growth in anthropogenic methane emissions in certain regions. This research also highlights the impact of low OH concentrations, high fire emissions, and wetland emissions on methane growth rates during 2010-2018.
