Un-jamming due to energetic instability: statics to dynamics

Stefan Luding et al.

Summary: Jamming/un-jamming transition in granular matter, involving solid- and fluid-like behavior, is a complex and ubiquitous phenomenon that requires a sound understanding. Besides pressure vanishing due to density decrease, yield can also occur if shear stress becomes too large for a given pressure. This mechanism is related to the loss of energy's convexity, causing irreversible re-arrangements of micro-structures. The study focuses on granular solid hydrodynamics with very soft materials, employing a simplified approach and combining insights from particle simulations to better understand the system transitions.

Phase transition in the binary mixture of jammed particles with large size dispersity

Yusuke Hara et al.

Summary: Research shows that particulate systems with different size dispersities in a binary mixture may exhibit two distinct jammed phases, with one phase consisting of only large particles being jammed and the other phase including both small and large jammed particles. Finite size effects reveal that the transition between jammed phases is similar to a first-order transition, and a critical point is observed in the phase diagram.
