Sewing spacetime with Lorentzian threads: complexity and the emergence of time in quantum gravity

Juan F. Pedraza et al.

Summary: Holographic entanglement entropy has recently been reformulated as Lorentzian flows. By studying the nesting of Lorentzian flows, we have explored several properties of holographic complexity, including the lower bound of complexity rate and the optimization process of complexity. We have provided explicit geometric realizations of Lorentzian flows in AdS backgrounds and discussed their behavior near the singularity in a black hole interior. We have also proposed a refined notion of complexity and explained the significance of Lorentzian threads.

Reconstructing the graviton

Alfio Bonanno et al.

Summary: We reconstruct the Lorentzian graviton propagator in asymptotically safe quantum gravity from Euclidean data. The positive spectral function of the dynamical graviton suggests the unitarity of asymptotically safe quantum gravity, while the negative parts in the spectral function of the background graviton are similar to the gluon spectral function.

The spatial Functional Renormalization Group and Hadamard states on cosmological spacetimes

R. Banerjee et al.

Summary: A spatial variant of the Functional Renormalization Group (FRG) is introduced on globally hyperbolic spacetimes. It is argued that such a FRG must be state dependent and based on a Hadamard state. A concrete implementation is presented for scalar quantum fields on flat Friedmann-Lemaitre spacetimes. The universal ultraviolet behavior of Hadamard states allows the flow to be matched to the one-loop renormalized flow, while the state-dependent infrared behavior is investigated for States of Low Energy.

Pregeometry and spontaneous time-space asymmetry

C. Wetterich

Summary: This paper investigates the emergence of metrics in pregeometry and proposes a model where the distinction between time and space arises from the dynamics. By formulating the model as a Yang-Mills theory with fermions and vector fields, geometry and general relativity emerge at large distances due to spontaneous symmetry breaking. The paper suggests that this type of model may behave consistently and well in the short distance limit.

The nonperturbative functional renormalization group and its applications

N. Dupuis et al.

Summary: The renormalization group is crucial in physics for determining the low-energy properties of systems and searching for ultraviolet completions. The nonperturbative functional renormalization group (FRG) method is a modern implementation of Wilson's RG, providing a framework to study models with correlated degrees of freedom over long distances. It is based on an exact functional flow equation and has applications in various fields of physics.

Background independent exact renormalisation

Kevin Falls

Summary: The geometric formulation of Wilson's exact renormalisation group is based on a gauge invariant ultraviolet regularisation scheme without the need for a background field. By introducing Pauli-Villars determinants in the path integral measure and requiring quasi-locality under a change in the cutoff scale, an exact renormalisation group flow equation for the Wilsonian effective action is derived without fixing the gauge. This approach allows for the calculation of key quantities such as the one-loop beta function in Yang-Mills and the one-loop divergencies of General Relativity.

Pregeometry and euclidean quantum gravity

Christof Wetterich

Summary: Einstein's general relativity can emerge from pregeometry, which is formulated as a SO(4) - Yang-Mills theory in euclidean pregeometry. The well-behaved propagators of all fields at short distances and absence of ghost or tachyonic poles in the graviton propagator make this pregeometry a valid candidate for euclidean quantum gravity, with no obstructions for analytic continuation to a Minkowski signature of the metric.

Dynamically emergent gravity from hidden local Lorentz symmetry

Shinya Matsuzaki et al.

Summary: Gravity can be regarded as a consequence of local Lorentz symmetry in defining a spinor field in curved spacetime. The gravitational action at a certain ultraviolet cutoff scale admits a zero-field limit, allowing for a linear realization of the Lorentz symmetry. Only three types of terms are allowed in the four-dimensional gravitational action at the cutoff scale: a cosmological constant, a linear term of the Lorentz field strength, and spinor kinetic terms.

Cosmological α′-corrections from the functional renormalization group

Ivano Basile et al.

Summary: In this study, the Functional Renormalization Group techniques were applied in string theory to derive an effective mini-superspace action for cosmological backgrounds in terms of the string scale alpha '. T-duality played a crucial role in classifying perturbative curvature corrections, leading to renormalization group equations with exact solutions in any spacetime dimension D. While an analytic solution with a non-Gaussian ultraviolet fixed point was found around D = 2, no analogous solution was found in D = 4 using polynomial truncations. The study also discussed potential cosmological implications of the findings.

String tension between de Sitter vacua and curvature corrections

Ivano Basile et al.

Summary: By utilizing the functional renormalization group and constraints of T-duality, we have derived cosmological effective actions to all orders in alpha', avoiding truncations of the theory space. Our findings show that higher-derivative alpha' corrections prohibit the existence of de Sitter vacua, supporting the no-de Sitter swampland conjecture in the presence of all-order effects in alpha'.
