Stone-Wales defects preserve hyperuniformity in amorphous two-dimensional networks

Duyu Chen et al.

Summary: A novel state of many-body systems, disordered hyperuniformity, has been discovered, which possesses characteristics similar to both a perfect crystal and a liquid or glass. Through a topological transformation in two-dimensional network structures, the continuous introduction of Stone-Wales defects can preserve hyperuniformity while changing the static structure factor and revealing unique electronic and mechanical behaviors associated with different classes of disorder in 2D materials.

Hyperuniformity in cyclically driven glasses

Saheli Mitra et al.

Summary: In the model glass under cyclic shear deformation conditions, compressibility is suppressed in minimally energetic structures, showing hyperuniformity below critical jamming density. Below the yield amplitude, the system reaches an absorbent steady state with suppressed density fluctuations, displaying hyperuniformity up to a finite length scale. Above the yield amplitude, density fluctuations are strongly enhanced with spatial phase separation into two hyperuniform regions due to shear band formation.

Dynamic evolution of hyperuniformity in a driven dissipative colloidal system

U. Seleme Nizam et al.

Summary: Hyperuniformity is emerging as a unified concept to classify and characterize states of matter, with importance placed on dissipative systems. This study examines the dynamic evolution of hyperuniformity in a driven dissipative colloidal system, demonstrating the robustness of hyperuniformity in a colloidal crystal against lattice imperfections and environmental perturbations. A computational toolbox was developed to aid real-time characterization of hyperuniformity and to measure the impact of external perturbations on particle distribution.

Control of Phase Morphology of Binary Polymer Grafted Nanoparticle Blend Films via Direct Immersion Annealing

Wenjie Wu et al.

Summary: The phase separation of binary mixtures of polymer-grafted nanoparticles (PGNPs) with a soft polymer-grafted layer on the inorganic core exhibits different kinetics from conventional polymer blends, and can be controlled by switching the solvent composition. Despite a relatively low coarsening exponent, the phase separation process is completed within minutes and the roughness of the blend film saturates at a scale proportional to the phase separation pattern scale. The direct immersion annealing method provides a significant opportunity for controlling the phase separation morphology of PGNP blends by solution processing.

Nearly hyperuniform, nonhyperuniform, and antihyperuniform density fluctuations in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides with defects

Duyu Chen et al.

Summary: Hyperuniform many-body systems exhibit suppressed density fluctuations at infinite wavelengths, but the introduction of localized defects can gradually destroy the hyperuniformity and lead to anti-hyperuniform structures with large-scale density fluctuations. Even small correlated displacements in the structure can significantly impact hyperuniformity.

Structural characterization of many-particle systems on approach to hyperuniform states

Salvatore Torquato

Summary: The study focuses on exploring quantitative descriptors for identifying hyperuniform states in many-particle systems in d-dimensional Euclidean space. Criteria were established to distinguish hyperuniform and nonhyperuniform distance-scaling regimes, with the ratio B/A playing a key role. Various diagnostic measures, such as the hyperuniformity index H and direct-correlation function length scale xi(c), were used to analyze different solvable models under different control parameters, revealing correlations between diagnostic hyperuniformity measures.
