Can current reanalyses accurately portray changes in Southern Annular Mode structure prior to 1979?

Gareth J. Marshall et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that ERA5 best reproduces Antarctic near-surface air temperatures in the early period and is also the most homogeneous reanalysis across the early and late periods, indicating a significant change in the relationship between Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and Antarctic near-surface air temperatures between the two periods.

West Antarctic Surface Climate Changes Since the Mid-20th Century Driven by Anthropogenic Forcing

Quentin Dalaiden et al.

Summary: Although the surface climate in West Antarctica has undergone significant changes in recent decades, the exact role of human activities in these changes has not been fully investigated, leading to uncertainties in future projections. This study uses instrumental and proxy-based reconstructions, as well as climate model simulations, to analyze and quantify the forced response in observed changes. The results show that the surface climate changes since the 1950s were largely driven by human activities, particularly greenhouse gas emissions and stratospheric ozone depletion.

Historical and Projected Changes in the Southern Hemisphere Surface Westerlies

Rishav Goyal et al.

Summary: The Southern Hemisphere surface westerlies play a significant role in controlling regional climate patterns, ocean circulation, and carbon uptake. Research based on CMIP5, CMIP6, and reanalysis data reveals historical and projected changes in Southern Hemisphere westerly winds, including a reduction in poleward shift and an increase in wind intensity under high emission scenarios.

Strengthening Southern Hemisphere Westerlies and Amundsen Sea Low Deepening Over the 20th Century Revealed by Proxy-Data Assimilation

Gemma K. O'Connor et al.

Summary: By reconstructing 20th century sea level pressure and zonal surface wind anomalies over the Southern Ocean, this study highlights the significant strengthening of midlatitude Pacific westerlies and the deepening of the Amundsen Sea Low. The results also suggest a poleward shift of circumpolar westerlies attributed to anthropogenic forcing, emphasizing the zonally asymmetric character of atmospheric circulation changes at high southern latitudes with implications for Antarctic ice sheet change.

Reconstructing atmospheric circulation and sea-ice extent in the West Antarctic over the past 200 years using data assimilation

Quentin Dalaiden et al.

Summary: By reconstructing the climate variability of the past two centuries in the West Antarctic sector, this study reveals long-term trends, such as the reduction of sea ice in the Bellingshausen-Amundsen Sea sector starting around 1850 and the strengthening and eastward shift of the Amundsen Sea Low pressure after 1950. The study also shows that the sea-ice variations in the Ross Sea sector are strongly related to the Amundsen Sea Low pressure variability over the past two centuries, including recent trends, while the link between ASL and sea-ice in the Bellingshausen-Amundsen Sea sector changes with time, becoming stronger in recent decades.

Evaluating stratospheric ozone and water vapour changes in CMIP6 models from 1850 to 2100

James Keeble et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the long-term changes in stratospheric ozone and water vapor in CMIP6 models under different emissions scenarios, highlighting both global and regional patterns. While global mean TCO is projected to recover to 1960s levels in the middle of the 21st century, tropics may not reach the same levels due to various factors including reductions in ozone-depleting substances and changes in tropospheric ozone.

Drivers of Pine Island Glacier speed-up between 1996 and 2016

Jan De Rydt et al.

Summary: Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica has experienced significant ice loss over the past two decades, mainly due to ocean-induced thinning of its floating ice shelf and grounding line retreat. Besides these primary factors, large-scale calving and the plasticity of the bed also play important roles in the glacier's evolution.
