Diversity of filamentous fungi communities in the soils of agroecological crop polycultures and the Atlantic Rain Forest

Amanda Lucia Alves et al.

Summary: This study compared filamentous fungi communities from different land uses in Northeastern Brazil and found that despite the differences in plant diversity, the mycobiota of both systems consisted of generalist fungi that act on the decomposition of organic matter. The similar physicochemical properties of the systems suggest the importance of crop diversification in agroecological soil management.

A taxonomic review of Penicillium section Charlesia

Bing-Da Sun et al.

Summary: Penicillium section Charlesia was established based on a multigene phylogeny and includes a variety of species that can grow on diverse substrates. Three new species were identified in this section, highlighting the limited taxonomy research within the group. Through a multigene phylogenetic analysis, 12 distinct species were revealed, including three new ones, based on morphological characteristics such as macromorphology, vesicle width, and conidial shape.

Two new Penicillium section Sclerotiorum species from sugarcane soil in Brazil

Sergio Murilo Sousa Ramos et al.

Summary: Two new Penicillium species, Penicillium barbosae sp. nov. and Penicillium limae sp. nov., were isolated from soil of sugarcane fields in a deforested area of Atlantic Forest in Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Both species, belonging to section Sclerotiorum, series Adametziorum, exhibit unique morphological features and differ from their phylogenetically closely related relatives. This discovery adds to our understanding of Penicillium biodiversity in tropical agricultural soils.
