Metagenomic analysis of microbial communities across a transect from low to highly hydrocarbon-contaminated soils in King George Island, Maritime Antarctica

Diogo Jurelevicius et al.

Summary: The study showed that microbial richness and diversity decreased with the increase in hydrocarbon concentration in soils around the Brazilian Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz. Certain genera, such as Cytophaga, Methyloversatilis, Polaromonas, and Williamsia, were positively correlated with the concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and/or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in the soil samples.

Sources and depositional changes of aliphatic hydrocarbons recorded in sedimentary cores from Admiralty Bay, South Shetland Archipelago, Antarctica during last decades

Cesar C. Martins et al.

Summary: Organic biomarkers, such as aliphatic hydrocarbons, have been widely used to evaluate recent environmental changes in marine environments, including Antarctica. The sources of aliphatic hydrocarbons in Antarctic sediment cores have remained stable, with a slight increase in inputs observed between 1975 and 1992.

Exploring the plant environmental DNA diversity in soil from two sites on Deception Island (Antarctica, South Shetland Islands) using metabarcoding

Micheline Carvalho-Silva et al.

Summary: This study is the first to apply high-throughput sequencing of environmental DNA to investigate the diversity of Viridiplantae DNA in soil samples from two contrasting locations on Deception Island in Antarctica. The results revealed a high percentage of exotic plant species, most likely linked to human food sources from local national research and tourism facilities.

Biodiversity of Actinomycetes from Heavy Metal Contaminated Technosols

Michaela Cimermanova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biodiversity of streptomycete-like isolates from various technosols in Slovakia, identifying a potential new species within the Crossiella genus and at least one possibly new species within the Streptomyces genus. Some isolates showed high resistance to heavy metals, with lead being the most tolerated metal. The results suggest that technosols could be a promising source of new actinomycete species with bioremediation potential.

Assessment of the Degradation Potential and Genomic Insights towards Phenanthrene by Dietzia psychralcaliphila JI1D

Janardhan Ausuri et al.

Summary: Extreme marine environments have potential for isolating novel microbes such as Dietzia psychralcaliphila J1ID, which showed high phenanthrene degradation activity. Whole genome analysis revealed the metabolic pathways of degradation involved in this strain.
