Stable potassium isotopes (41K/39K) track transcellular and paracellular potassium transport in biological systems

John A. Higgins et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fractionation of stable potassium isotopes in three biological systems and finds that the fractionation depends on the transport pathway and transmembrane transport machinery. Passive transport through channels favors K-39, while transport against the electrochemical gradient shows little to no isotopic fractionation.

Steady analyses of potassium stable isotopes using a Thermo Scientific Neoma MC-ICP-MS

Philippe Telouk et al.

Summary: This study reports the capabilities of a new generation MC-ICP-MS instrument, Neoma, to measure the K-41/K-39 ratio in potassium stable isotope compositions. The instrument shows comparable performance to other methods in terms of potassium concentration mismatch between sample and standard, but has lower sensitivity to acid concentration mismatch and matrix element effects. The repeatability and long-term reproducibility of the measurements are also reported. A simple chemical purification method using ion exchange chromatography is applied to measure the delta K-41 value in geological and biological reference materials, as well as blood samples of cancer and control patients. The results show good agreement with previously reported values and provide additional data for future interlaboratory comparison studies.

Brainstem atrophy in the early stage of Alzheimer's disease: a voxel-based morphometry study

Xiaoxi Ji et al.

Summary: The study revealed bilateral loss in the pons and left part of the midbrain in patients with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD-M) compared to the normal control group. There was also greater loss in the left midbrain in the AD-M group compared to those with very mild AD (AD-VM). This is the first VBM study providing evidence of early brainstem alterations in Alzheimer's disease.

Potassium isotopic fractionation in a humid and an arid soil-plant system in Hawai'i

Wenshuai Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates potassium isotope fractionation within a soil-plant system in humid and arid environments on Kohala Mountain, Hawai‘i. The results show that within the same plant, different tissues have varying potassium isotopic compositions, and isotopic differences are observed between soils of different moisture levels. The study suggests that processes such as K redistribution during intra-plant circulation and K uptake at the root-soil interface contribute to potassium isotope fractionation.

Summary: The Nu SapphireTM MC-ICP-MS is a high-precision instrument for measuring potassium isotopes, effectively addressing major isobaric interferences and providing high potassium sensitivity. The precision and accuracy of potassium isotopic data are influenced by several parameters, including total potassium concentration, matching of potassium intensities between sample and standard, and the presence of matrix elements.

Robust Potassium Isotopic Analysis of Geological and Biological Samples via Multicollector ICP-Mass Spectrometry Using the Extra-High Resolution Mode

Kasper Hobin et al.

Summary: A novel and robust method for high-precision potassium isotopic analysis was developed using a multicollector ICP-mass spectrometer with a mass resolving power of 15,000. The method allowed for high-precision and interference-free analysis by employing hot plasma conditions, the high-transmission jet-type sampling cone, and the XHR mode. The method was successfully applied to geological and biological samples, with results in good agreement with previous reports.

Summary: The techniques for measuring 41K/39K ratios were reported using a Nu Instruments Sapphire double-focusing multicollector ICPMS, equipped with a hexapole collision/reaction gas cell. The method effectively eliminates spectral interferences and ion beams, allowing for direct and accurate measurement of potassium isotopic ratios. Optimized conditions enable high reproducibility and facilitate the study of small potassium isotopic variations in terrestrial samples.
